2023: Charter jets boom as political shuttles spike across Nigeria

Aircraft used for charter services include HS125, Bombardier jets, Embraer regional jets, ATR 72, and Dornier jets.

The airplane used by charter operators,  who are referred to as Fixed Base Operators (FBOs) are stationed on their facilities at airports in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Kaduna, Benin, Asaba, Uyo and Yola.

A source familiar with the business said logistic companies whose job it is  to secure charter jets for clients have been busy in the last few weeks to meet the demands of their clients.

Besides meeting the needs of their clients, these operators have been working hard to meet regulatory requirements set for such operations.

From private terminals at the Lagos Airport where some of the charter jets are parked, the operators have to observe aerodrome standards set by the authorities.

A source hinted that some scheduled carriers have been sourcing aircraft for hire for the movement of politically exposed persons.

An operator who pleaded not to be named said some of the politicians are also benefitting from companies which have fractional ownership of aircraft , which they have  access to when the part owners are not flying them.

Some State governments, however, have aircraft which could be deployed for campaign shuttles.
