2023 Polls: Journalists Charged To Conduct Themselves Professionally

…the Union would not take it lightly with any form of intimidation, harassment and obstruction to duty

Journalists assigned with the responsibility of covering the 2023 General Elections in the South East Geo-Political Zone have been urged to shun bias and partisanship of any form but to be fair, objective, accurate and conform themselves in line with stipulated electoral guidelines.

In a Press Statement issued in Enugu, Enugu State and signed by the Vice President and Zonal Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), South East Zone, Comrades Emmanuel Ifesinachi and Ezenwa Adiuku respectively stated that, as strategic stakeholders in the elections, Journalists must be neutral but precise and ensure that their reportage/coverage is such that will help bring trust, confidence, stability and credibility to the entire electoral process, adding that they should work to be part of the efforts to ensure violent-free elections in the Zone.

While reminding Journalists to be properly accredited and identified, the Statement appealed on all Security Agencies in the Area to designate special attention to the safety of the Journalists on election duty before, during and after the elections exercise.

It further stated that the Union would not take it lightly with any form of intimidation, harassment and obstruction to duty of any Journalist or free-flow of information on the part of any Media Establishment in the Zone, and expressed the hope that all stakeholders in this year’s elections would jointly make it free, fair, credible and peaceful exercise.

Accordingly, Journalists on election duty are advised to contact the NUJ Situation Room in case of any threat or attack against them or their equipment using the following phone numbers:
