2027: Amaechi backs Peter Obi’s anti-corruption stance on subsidy

Rotimi Amaechi, the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said that political figures and others now recognise the consistency of Peter Obi’s long-standing positions, particularly on fuel subsidy and corruption in the oil and gas sector.

Amaechi stated that Obi had been clear from the outset that he would confront graft in the petroleum industry and refuse to divert public funds.

“The political class and everyone else knows that Peter Obi means every word he says. They are now re-echoing the message he has been saying from day one,” Amaechi said.

On the subsidy question, Amaechi noted that Obi had repeatedly emphasised tackling corruption rather than relying on government resources intended for the nation. He quoted Obi as saying: “If you, the head, don’t steal, your wife doesn’t steal, you reduce corruption by 50%.”

Amaechi added that this record explained why Obi’s supporters maintain that “his word is his bond.”
