Music icon 2Face Idibia has pushed back against comparisons between himself and Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, calling such parallels “ridiculous and disrespectful”, even as he publicly reflected on personal challenges in his role as a father.
In interviews this week, the veteran singer, whose career stretches more than two decades, emphasised the distinct legacies of Fela and contemporary artists such as Wizkid.
“To compare myself — or anyone — with a legend like Fela is disrespectful,” 2Face said, asserting that Fela’s impact on Nigerian music and sociopolitical consciousness was incomparable.
“It’s ridiculous to even entertain that discussion.” The remarks came in response to recent debates among fans and media outlets that placed him alongside other major Nigerian acts.
The discussion around musical legacy follows 2Face’s recent comments on his personal life, in which he acknowledged his imperfections as a parent.
“I have not been the best dad lately,” the singer conceded in a candid social media message, sharing that he was working to improve his relationship with his children amid the demands of his career. “I’m human, and I’m trying my best every day.”
2Face, born Innocent Idibia, has long been celebrated for his contributions to Afro-pop and R&B, with hits that helped define Nigeria’s contemporary music scene. Despite his success, he appeared determined to separate his achievements from debates about comparing divergent musical styles and generations.
His remarks highlight ongoing conversations within Nigerian entertainment about artistic influence and the evolving nature of Afrobeat and pop music.
On parenting, the artist’s open admission of challenges drew supportive responses from some fans who praised his vulnerability, while others encouraged him to continue prioritising family engagement.
