Anambra State Government through the office of Mr Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Hon Tonycollins Nwabunwanne have stepped in to resolve a series of complaints revolving around some custom and traditions of the Umuawulu community in Awaka South Local Council which impedes peace in the community
Addressing the traditional ruler, his cabinet members, representatives of the three villages which made up the community and other stakeholders of the community after listening to their presentations which hinge on the two cardinal issues that have to do with the process of the Iwaji ceremony and the method of sharing of chieftaincy titles, Mr commissioner, appealed to the traditional ruler and the representatives of Enugwu village not to go further observing their separate Iwaji ceremony the same day on which the monarch celebrates the new yam festival in order not to overshadow the community’s new yam festival presides by the monarch.
He suggested that the process of sharing the chieftaincy titles in the community should be considered so each quarter will be well represented in the cabinet. He also urges HRH Igwe Joel Egwuonwu, and his cabinet members to always work as a team to achieve a more positive result.
Speaking further, Tony Collins appealed to the stakeholders to go home, interact and dialogue with each other to harmonise their interests. He also promised them that he, the commissioner, will meet with the traditional ruler and his cabinet members to resolve the remaining issues before the upcoming New Yam Festival of the community.
Some of the participants of the meeting commented on the way forward and at the end resolutions were reached in the interest of peace and harmony in the community.
