* Seven thousand, one hundred and fifty women in Anambra state have undergone cervical cancer screening, as the state government has kicked off the second phase of the exercise. The Anambra State Reproductive Health Coordinator, Dr. Uju Okoye disclosed this during the training of new health workers that will participate in the exercise.

* Nine farmers in Awa community in Orumba North Local Government Area, have been empowered with cash by the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Israel Ezue The empowerment was the highlight of the 2023  “Otute Awa”, the New Yam festival of the community. Speaking during the ceremony Igwe Ezue explained that the gesture is part of moves to encourage people to venture into agriculture in Awa community.

* The management of Olivia University,

Bujumbura Burundi, East Africa, has begun scouting for students in Anambra State for courses in medicine/surgery, nursing, pharmacy and others. To this end, it has announced plans to award scholarship to Nigerians who would want to study those courses in the university.

These were disclosed by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Rev. Fr. Prof Josephat Obi-Oguejiofor, during an interactive session with relevant stakeholders and intending students in Awka, the Anambra State Capital.

* The Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport has been christened after Anambra-born father of African Literature, Prof. Chinua Achebe. Governor Chukwuma Soludo made the announcement at Nigeria’s 63rd Independence anniversary celebration held at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka. The airport will now be known as Chinua Achebe International Passenger and Cargo Airport, Umueri. 

*  The marvelous mixture of grace, service and hard work seen in the life and ministry of Rt. Rev. Msgr. Dr. Patrickmary Anene Mmuo gathered people from all walks of life in thanksgiving to God and in celebration of the gift of this great soul to humanity and the Church. The event which took place at St. Francis’ Catholic Church, Enugwu-Ukwu in Njikoka LGA of Anambra State, the parishioners, priests, religious men and women, relatives and friends spared nothing in showering encomium and celebrating the first indigenous priest of Enugwu-Ukwu, Monsignor Patrickmary Mmuo.

* President General of Ifitedunu community in Dunukofia local government area, Chief Uchenna Nwoye Oragwuncha who was assaulted by thugs supposedly sent by a chief in the community has been flown oversea for medical attention. ANN recalls that Orangwuncha had been attacked at the community market square, where he had gone to supervise projects he was building for the community.

* The Anambra State Government has warned Chief Augustine Ndigwe to stop parading as the traditional ruler of Awka. The warning was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu.

ANN recall that early in Governor Soludo’s administration in 2022, he instructed a detachment of police and military to seal the palace of Ndigwe who was billed to celebrate the community’s new yam festival as monarch of the town.

* Anambra State athletics team (female) proved that they are an emerging force in the sprints as they rivaled Delta’s dominance in the National Youth Games. Chiamaka Lucy Nwankwo sensationally took the girls 100m with a time of 12.29 secs, she was chased down by Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo who ran 12.33secs, both athletes had powered Anambra State to win the girls 4x100m gold. The Nwankwos set the Stephen Keshi Stadium on fire with their sterling performance sweeping spectators off their feet.

* Ozu kingdom in Ndiukwuenu community, Orumba North Council Area of Anambra State was agog as people from all walks of life gathered as the traditional head of the kingdom, Chief Henry Onwurah celebrated this year’s new yam festival. The festival showcased the rich cultural heritage and tradion of Ndiukwuenu with different performances such uvie dance, masquerading, simulated yam cultivation process thrilling the festival-goers.

* The Chairperson of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Mrs. Ogwo Scholastica Anolika, has been allegedly attack by the Council Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA), Mr. Jonathan Chidozie Uzoigwe, for addressing workers o. the Nation’s 63th Independence day celebration

* The Anambra State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, Mrs Blessed Iruma, has said that 63 per cent of teachers in the state are corps members. This is contrary to the claims that the state government had approved the employment of no fewer than 5,000 teachers for both primary and secondary schools in the state.

Iruma disclosed this recently, during the 2023 corps employers workshop in Awka, the state capital. She called on employers in the state to prioritise their welfare in workplaces by giving attention to their safety and comfort at all times.
