* Police operatives following an intel gathering laid ambush on miscreants along Oba flyover in Idemili South LGA, Anambra State. Police intercepted the gang of four armed men who were operating on motorbikes and demobilized one of the miscreants while the other three escaped the scene with bullet injuries. According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer,
Anambra State Command, the operatives recovered a locally made barreta pistol, four expanded cartridges, two phones, and some signals/initials showing unpatriotism and disloyalty to the Nigerian government.
* The Sahelian Institute for Bamboo Research and Entrepreneurship Development, (SIBRED) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria has held its first Sahelian Congress on Bamboo and Rattan (SACOBAR) with stakeholders resolving to work assiduously together towards the development of bamboo and rattan industry in Nigeria and the entire Sub-saharan Africa. The Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Prof. Charles Esimone, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, appreciated the growing attention bamboo and rattan resources are attracting in Sahelian Africa countries through SIBRED. The Vice Chancellor was optimistic that the future is bright with the number of school children in attendance who have demonstrated passionate interest in maximizing the benefits of bamboo and rattan resources.
* The Commissioner of Police Anambra State Police Command, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam has commend the good people of Anambra in their resolve to sustain the message of peace by standing up against illegal sit-at-home orders by criminal elements and any other act that threatens our national unity and public peace in the State. CP Itam stated this when he led the police security patrol to some identified areas in the State to assess the security deployment and monitor compliance to the Operational order. The Commissioner of Police noted that ndi Anambra is blessed with vibrant, energetic, and enterprising people full of potential and this can only be fully realized in a peaceful, secure environment.
* Azia community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State is set to elect a brand new traditional ruler after 10 years of kingship imbroglio. All roads therefore lead to the civic centre on 1st June, 2024 where four serious contenders for the traditional stool of Azia will test their popularity and acceptance amongst Azia people. Recall that stakeholders from Azia community had gone to Government House Awka to seek government intervention in the Igweship battle rocking the community.
* The Squadron Commander, Okija Vigilante Group in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, Mr. Ikenga Ben Eze, has revealed why he and his men did not respond during the recent assassination of Barr. Peter Awa, an indigene and Secretary-General of the town, by gunmen. Recall that some yet-to-be-identified gunmen, assassinated Barr. Awa in his hometown, Okija. The deceased, until his death, was the Director of Public Prosecution in Anambra State and Vice-Chairperson of the NBA in the Ihiala Council Area, and was elected secretary of the Okija Progressive Union in November 2023.
However, in his reaction to the incidents through a viral open obtained by this, the Squadron Commander, Okija Vigilante Group, Mr. Eze recounted the interventional efforts of the his men during the rampageous attacks. While narrating how they intervened after receiving a distress call regarding gunshots at Ubahueze Ihite at about 2.am where Mr. Izuchukwu was shot; Mr. Eze further revealed that they could not respond or intervene during the assassination of Barr. Awa due to “limited resources”, as they had already exhausted the little they had.
* Okochi Village, Okpuno in Awka South Local Government Area has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo for urgent intervention to the menace of gully erosion threatening to cut roads and destroy buildings in the community. The already swallowed perimeter fences and other structures on it’s path, is also on the verge of caving-in the major road within the area, connecting different parts of the community. According to the Chairman of Okochi village, Chief Ekene Obiorah, the situation has become worrisome and tiring since four years the erosion became noticeable, saying that they have spent a lot within their means to curtail the erosion, all to no avail, as it keeps expanding and causing more havocs.
* Police acting on credible information intercepted a notorious criminal and cultist in the early hours of Wednesday in Nkwelle, Oyi LGA of Anambra State, recoveres one locally made pistol and four live ammunition. Mr. Amalu Onyedika ‘M’ aged 32 years old who hails from Eziagu in Enugu State claimed to be a technician who deals with aluminum and glass windows business in building materials, Onitsha, confessed to being a member of the junior Vikings secret cult.
According to him, he joined the notorious gang at the age of 22 and has been mentioned as one of those terrorizing Nkwelle and its environs. Anambra Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, directs that the investigation be widened and deepened to bring to book other gang members, and the case should be charged to court after the investigation.
* Stakeholders in Awka, Anambra State capital has intensify efforts to curb the trending cult-related killings that has reportedly claimed the lives of about thirty four youths. The summit which took place at Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre Awka, attracted Ozo title holders, village heads, women leaders, clergies, politicians amongst others. The Lawmaker representing Awka South one Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Nigeria Henry Mbachu in his opening speech decried the falling moral values amongst the youth, failure of parents, and, elders to inculcate moral values in their children, stated that despite that gates have been constructed at the entry and exit points of virtually every street, numbering currently about 54 gates, and, about 18 village vigilant group, the situation has really required that a more deliberate actions should be taken to proffer solutions to the ugly development.
* The Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Charles Okechukwu Esimone has said that he actually came, saw and conquered despite challenges in the institution.
Esimone, the 6th substantive VC of UNIZIK in an interview in Awka said that on assumption of office he launched a vision dubbed Project 200 hinged on five pillars, namely: academic excellence, community service, administrative reforms, Discipline and Advancement. The VC applauded previous admistrators of the university saying he came to add more to what was on the ground. Esimone revealed that his previous experience from University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) from where he migrated to UNIZIK and the fact that he had acted for his predecessor before his appointment prepared him for the work ahead.
* Construction work on the road leading to Solution Fun city, Awka, is eighty percent completed. The project manager, Engineer Ola Kings made this known while fielding questions from ABS Works Correspondent Ngozi Obileri who monitored pace of work on the road. It was observed that laying of stone base has been completed on over eighty percent of the road. Men of FEROTEX construction company, the firm handling the project were seen carrying out various levels of work on the site. Speaking to the press, Engineer Kings said that they will complete work on the road before the end of July this year in line with the directive of Governor Chukwuma Soludo whom he said was certain that the Solution Fun City would be operational within three months.
