* Anambra State Government has advised citizens living in flood-prone Local Government Areas and Communities to begin to immediately move their crops, poultry, fish ponds and domestic animals to safe places to avoid being caught unawares by flooding.
The State’s Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu gave the advise in a video being circulated in various social media platforms.
According to Nwosu, the advise followed recent warnings of high rainfall and floods expected this year from Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
Among the high risk local government areas mentioned by the Commissioner are Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West, Onitsha South, Onitsha North, Awka North, Idemili South, Ekwusigo and Ihiala.
* Chairman of Anambra State branch of National Union of Road Transport Workers ( NURTW), Chief Dominic Ezebuenyi, has decried the poor management of parks and transport industry at large in the state which he said sometimes generate into violence.
Chief Ezebuenyi, said there have been instances when drivers were outrightly killed by touts employed by contractors who have become emergency park managers just because they want to make money even when they don’t have the skill to manage parks.
He said in an interview with newsmen in Onitsha that at some other times articulated vehicles have blocked major expressway in Onitsha either at Upper Iweka or Bridgehead in a bid to protest the high handedness of these hoodlums employed by park operators to collect money from drivers.
* The remains of a former member of House of Assembly in the old Anambra State, Dr. Ernest Madu Onyekwena, has been laid to rest in Ufuma, Orumba North Local Goverment Area of the state.
The late former lawmaker who was born in 1946 into the family of Onyekwena of Umuenebu village, was an Engineer and Knight of the Anglican Church and held the traditional titles of “Omekannaya 1 of Ufuma” and “Enebu of Umuenebu”.
As Anambra second republic legislator in 1983, the deceased was said to have used his position as Chairman, House Committee on Tertiary Education, to influence citing of the second campus of the then Anambra State Polytechnic, now Federal Polytechnic, Oko, at Ufuma.
* Youths in Anambra State have been trained on policy advocacy and are now ready to actively engage in advocating for important issues affecting their communities.
The two day workshop was organized by Catch Them Young Community Initiative (CATYCOI) with support from Nigeria Youth Future Fund and LEAP Africa. The training was held in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area of the state.
Addressing the participants, Executive Director of CATYCOI, Mr Nonso Orakwe, explained that the the training was to equip youths with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively promote their causes and influence decision-makers in the society.
* The women’s wing of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Anambra State Chapter has held its annual seminar and special prayer.
The event, with the theme “Women: The Real Help,” held at PFN Secretariat in Awka. The seminar emphasized the crucial roles women play in supporting and uplifting their families, communities, and nation.
The event brought together women from various pentecostal churches in different Local Government Areas of the state for a day of spiritual empowerment and intercession for the nation and Anambra State.
It featured inspiring teachings, prayers, and worship sessions – all focused on equipping the women to be effective instruments of change in their families, communities, and the nation at large.
* A stakeholders meeting of the Labour Party (LP) in Awka, Anambra State was disrupted when a group of protesters infiltrated the event and challenged the authority of the Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti to summon the meeting.
The meeting, intended to strategize and plan for the party’s future, was thrown into disorder as the protesters loudly proclaimed, “We don’t want Alex Otti! He’s not competent!”
The disruption temporarily halted proceedings, as party leaders attempted to regain control of the situation.
Adding to the tension, the protesters argued that declared the National Chairman of Labour Party, Julius Abure, whose tenure as has long expired, still holds authority, contradicting the directives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
* Public servants in Anambra State have been urged to work towards restoring citizens confidence in government.
The State Support Officer for Project Trust, Ujunwa Ananwude, made the appeal in Awka during a training programme for officials of the state ministries of health, education as well as Power and Water Resources and the agencies under them.
The meeting is part of the implementation of the project by Connected Development, CODE with the support by MacArthur Foundation in the state.
Presenting an overview of the project, Ananwude said that ProjectTrust is targeted at deepening and institutionalizing accountability, social inclusion systems and processes to promote resilience and sustainability in governance across Nigeria.
* The CEO of Nwoke Udi Palmwine Bar in Awka, Anambra State, Mazi Ndubuisi Eze
has been honored by the Rotary Club of Awka Metropolis with an Award of Entrepreneurship Development for his outstanding performance in serving Humanity.
The award was presented during the installation of the 14th President of the Rotary Club of Awka Metropolis, Rotarian Micheal Ifeacho, at the Best Western Meloch Hotel in Anambra State.
The newly installed President, RTN ifeacho while presenting the award to Nwoke Udi said it was for his outstanding performance in community service, philanthropy, and humanity service to God and mankind.
The Rotary President noted that Nwome Udi Palmwine Bar, Awka has grown to be a household name in the Entertainment business for his ability to be consistent and dedicated in the projection of Igbo and Africa delicacies.
* The transition committee chairman of Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State Hon. Chimezie Obi has revealed how he used skill acquisition programmes to address insecurity in the council area.
Obi who made the revelations while speaking said he was able to resuscitate as well as revive an abandoned skill acquisition centre at Ihembosi neglected by past administrations.
Obi explained that the facility which used to be abandoned and forgotten has metamorphosed into a veritable platform to take youths off the streets and engage them with economic skills for self-employment thereby curbing insecurity in the area with job and wealth creation for youngsters.
He noted that following the enrollment of youths in the skill acquisition empowerment scheme, Ekwusigo Local Government Area is currently one of the most secured and safest council areas in the state as a result of his administration’s resolve to invest in human infrastructure.
* Thirteen political parties in Anambra State, under the umbrella of the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), resolved to participate in the September 28th local government area elections in the state.
The political parties had initially opposed the September 28th date for the election, contending that the time-frame was too short and that the amendments to the Anambra State Law by the state Assembly were a plot to disenfranchise the electorate.
Speaking shortly after the IPAC meeting, the Chairman of the body, Comrade Uche Ugwuoji, stated that for the purpose of deepening democracy in Nigeria, especially at the grassroots level and local government areas of Anambra State, the Inter Party Advisory Council IPAC, as the umbrella body of all political parties in Anambra State, resolved in its extraordinary meeting to participate
