The Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD) Enugu State chapter has urged the 17 newly-elected local government chairmen, their deputies, and the 260 counselors
to prioritize human development, particularly for persons with disabilities.
This is to help in ensuring equity, accessibility, and empowerment.
The statement signed by the chairman, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPWD , Enugu State chapter, Comrade Onyebuchi Mba, particularly requests for the appointment of persons with disabilities into key political positions across the local government areas.
“As grassroots leaders, your inclusive governance is anticipated to uplift the most vulnerable, defending the defenseless and giving voice to the voiceless.
“In your respective LGAs, inclusive leadership is crucial, and we trust that you will ensure public infrastructure and services are accessible to all, regardless of ability by providing equal opportunities in education, employment, healthcare and supporting initiatives that enhance the socio-economic well-being of persons with disabilities”.
It congratulates them on their victories in the recently conducted local government elections in the area, which it attributes to their antecedents and dedication which is evident in the people’s overwhelming support during the polls.
While pledging collaboration with the democratically-elected local government helmsmen, the statement appreciates the state governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, for upholding democracy.
It also reminds him to give persons with disabilities a sense of belonging in his administration.
The statement equally pleads for the establishment of the Enugu State Disability Commission, as provided for by the 2023 Enugu State Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities Prohibition Law.
