* Human rights lawyer Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor has urged the governor Chukwuma Soludo, not to use the “Agunechemba” security outfit for political purposes.
Ejiofor, an indigene of Anambra State, made the call in a statement issued and made available to our reporter in Awka, the state capital.
Ejiofor said that the security outfit must not fall into the hands of political predators or be misused as a tool for oppression, intimidation, or harassment of opponents.
* Nonye’s Healthy Living Pap, the natural food formula for children with malnutrition, has retained a dominant presence in all the Primary Health Care facilities in Anambra State since the coverage was expanded in December, 2024.
The refilling of the pap banks in the one hundred and seventy-nine communities in Anambra was recently completed as a way to ensure its reach and effective service.
The process, according the governor’s wife whose NGO is overseeing the production and free distribution, is to ensure all-round availability of the supplement in the primary health facilities where they can always be accessed by parents whose children are battling malnutrition.
* A Family Law Expert at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, (NAU), Dr Helen Obi, has condemned the rising incidents of domestic violence in Anambra State.
Obi was reacting to the recent incident of the man, Sunday Nwana, resident of Eziezekwe village, Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area, who allegedly set his wife ablaze over marital infidelity.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, escalated after the suspect Mr. Sunday Nwaka accused his wife, Mrs. Chioma Nwaka of having an affair.
* The Head coach of Golden Eaglets, Manu Garba said selection of Golden Eaglets players, for the national team, will be based on merit.
Coach Garba while speaking in an interview on Wednesday at the Awka City Stadium, venue of the trial for Golden Eaglets, expressed concern that some states do not have infrastructure to encourage young talents in sports, calling on government intervention.
The Golden Eaglets Coach accompanied by the team Coordinator, Bello Garba Gusau, to the scouting which is currently going on (January 22nd and 23rd), commended the Anambra Football Association (FA) Chairman Chikelue Ilonyesi (The General), for making the event possible in the state, describing it as first of it’s kind.
The Anambra FA Chairman, Chikelue Iloenyosi while speaking, described the screening/trial as part of ways of engaging the youths meaningfully.
Iloenyosi revealed that the aim is to expose the numerous young talents in Anambra State and thereby giving them an opportunity to be part of the U-17 National Team.
* The Chairman of Njikoka Local Government Area, Barr. Chinedu Ononiba has visited the family of Mr. Sunday Nwaka, who allegedly set his wife ablaze with fuel and fire.
The Mayor was accompanied by the Commissioner of Women Affairs, Hon. Mrs. Ify Obinabo, and the Commissioner for Health, Hon. Dr. Afam Obidike amongst others.
The delegation was sent by the wife of the governor, Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo to gather first-hand information and assess the situation.
They met with the Abagana divisional station head, Mr. Peter Ekpeta, to discuss the incident.
The Mayor while speaking, condemned the act of domestic violence vigorously; urging couples to live in love and harmony. He appealed to them for calm, as the law will take its course.
* Aspirant for the forthcoming Anambra South senatorial by-election, Prince Samben Nwosu, who recently resigned his membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has formally joined the Young Progressive Party (YPP).
Nwosu, a frontline senatorial aspirant under the platform of the PDP, left his former party on 6th January, 2025, over alleged unfair treatment and orchestrated embarrassments meted to him by “some political merchants within the party.”
The former Federal Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission (PCC) was officially received into YPP on Wednesday, January 22, in Nnewi, by the state executive committee of the party, led by the state chairman of the party, Prince Moses Obi.
* Women from the 179 communities in Anambra State have embarked on a peaceful demonstration to mourn Late Mrs Blessing Nwaka.
Mrs. Nwaka was burnt to death by her husband in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The protesters were made up of reputable women from different associations including Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU led by the National President of ASATU Women Wing, Mrs Ify Okaro, led their protest to the office of the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare at Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Center Awka.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Mrs. Okaro warned their male counterparts to handle their spouses with care and love and avoid situations that will lead to violence.
Responding, Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo assured the women of the resolve of the wife of the Governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo to ensure that justice takes its full course and called on men to always report their wives to the ministry instead of taking laws into their hands.
* As Anambra State gears up for its off-cycle election, the focus remains on ensuring a transparent, fair, and credible process that sets the stage for strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
According to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Commission is ready for the election slated for Saturday, 8th November, 2025.
Speaking during the first quarterly consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja, Professor Yakubu, urged parties to adhere to the timelines outlined in the election schedule, emphasising the importance of early compliance to ensure smooth electoral processes.
The INEC Chairman disclosed that primaries for the nomination of candidates would take place between 20th March and 10th April 2025, urging political parties to submit their schedules promptly.
* Barr. Chinedu Ononiba, the Mayor of Njikoka, has kicked off the new year with a critical training and retreat for all political appointees of the local government.
The meeting aimed to emphasize the importance of synergy and effective use of their tenure to deliver on their campaign promises to the people of Njikoka.
During the retreat, Barr. Ononiba charged the appointees to work together seamlessly to achieve their goals. He reminded them that their primary responsibility is to serve the people who elected us—and that they must strive to make a positive impact on the people of Njikoka.
* A welder from Abagana in Njikoka Local Government Area, Mr. Sunday Nwaka, the suspect who burnt his wife to death has apologized to his five sons for the dastardly act.
Mr. Nwaka revealed that it was never his intention to do so but did it out of anger because he had no prior knowledge of his wife’s whereabouts the previous day.
Visibly in tears, Mr Nwaka, who is currently in police custody, urged his children to forgive him.
Reacting, the Women Affairs Commissioner, Hon. Mrs Ify Obinabo assured that justice must take its full course on the matter.
