Anambra Sun-Newspaper Correspondent ‘Attah’ Wins 2025 Okunna Prize For Ethical Journalism

The 2025 Professor Chinyere Stella Okunna prize for Ethical Journalism has been won by Anambra Sun-Newspaper Correspondent, Comrade Alloysious Attah.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that
Comrade Attah emerged winner with the report titled ‘Inside Anambra Troubled Communities”. He went home with One Hundred and fifty thousand naira (150,000).

While Comrade Ukpa Ewa emerged runner-up with the report titled “Why Anambra May Not Produce Female Governor Soon”. She went home with fifty thousand naira (50,000).

Speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Anambra State Chapter, Man Of The Year Award, which was part of the events to mark ‘NUJ Press Week’, Prof. Okunna said the reason behind the prize is to reward Ethical Journalism.

While congratulating the winners, Okunna, who is the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Paul University Awka, and First Female Professor, Sub Sahara Africa, maintained that the award is targeted at encouraging Journalists who go extra miles in getting facts and practice ethically.

Chairman of the Committee, Sir. Chuka Nnabuife while speaking on the process of choosing the winner, commended all those who sent in entries.

Sir. Nnabuife stated that in the course of selection, the juries observed lack of investigative reporting, reliance on secondary sources such as telephone conversations and WhatApp messages, instead of first hand information.

The Chairman of the juries revealed that some submissions from the entries
lacked the basic requirements and called on Journalists to improve on thorough investigation, editorial writings and ethical practice.

” The pannel paid attention to adherence to originality, balance to news, style of presentation and Journalistic ethics.

” We recommend for more quality entries and prioritize investigative Journalism and editorial skills”. Nnabuife remarked.

The juries who are practicing Journalists are: Mr. Jude Atupulazi, Dr. Henry Duru, Mr. Alfred Ajayi and Mrs. Chidozie Chukwuluta.
