Enugu to Harness Coal to Produce 1,000MW Power — Gov. Mbah

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah announced Thursday that the rich coal deposits in Enugu will be used to generate up to 1,000 megawatts of electricity, emphasizing that the coal will not be treated as a stranded asset without fair compensation.

Mbah addressed the Nigeria British Chamber of Commerce in Lagos during its “Meet The Governor Series,” where he’s presenting Enugu as a hotspot for investment. He highlighted that Enugu’s coal has less than 0.5% sulphur content — a low enough level to reduce environmental harm when modern clean-coal technologies are employed.

He also stressed that the coal’s high calorific value makes it especially suitable for electricity generation and declared his administration would not allow the coal to be warehoused without recompense.

Beyond energy, Governor Mbah said his government has slashed the state’s crime rate by over 80% and is pushing infrastructure projects — including putting in place tourism initiatives and expanding airport operations — to attract three million visitors annually.
