Arise News Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu Killed in Abuja Robbery

Arise News Channel has announced the tragic death of its news anchor, reporter and producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday. She was 29.

The station said the incident is under investigation by the Nigeria Police, calling for a swift probe and prosecution of those responsible.

Maduagwu, fondly called Sommie, was described as a vibrant voice who deeply connected with viewers. Beyond her work in journalism, she was also a trained lawyer and a supportive colleague.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time. Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory,” Arise News management said in a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi.

Her death has sparked widespread grief across Nigeria’s media industry, with many colleagues and admirers mourning the loss of a rising star in broadcasting.
