The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the parade once scheduled for Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2025. The decision was confirmed in a statement released by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
In the official release, the government said:
“The Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade … The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary.”
The statement, signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, also reassured that other commemorative activities — including the presidential broadcast, cultural programmes, and the National Campus Debate — would still take place as scheduled.
At a press conference in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government, Senator George Akume, described Independence Day as “a profound opportunity for us to reflect … celebrate our resilience, and renew our commitment to unity, peace and progress.”
The government emphasised that the cancellation is meant to avoid logistical and security strains and not to downplay the importance of the 65th anniversary.
