Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized the use of derogatory language, such as “street urchins” and “low-class Nigerians,” to describe his supporters, stating that humanity remains the most paramount principle in his political engagements.
In a recent statement, Obi condemned the trend of citizens—particularly leaders—looking down on fellow Nigerians, arguing that such rhetoric reflects the deeply unfortunate state of the nation.
“I have never and will never look down on anyone, except to lift them up. After all, we can only rise by lifting others,” Obi declared.
Dignity for Every Nigerian
The former Anambra State governor stated that his political involvement has always been focused on standing with ordinary Nigerians whose voices and resources have been allegedly stolen by the elite.
Obi passionately rejected the degrading labels, asserting the inherent worth of every citizen.
“No Nigerian is of no value. No Nigerian is a street urchin,” he affirmed. “It speaks volumes about the state of our nation that everyday Nigerians, are now battered by poverty and hardship, to the point their leaders refer to them as of no value, and urchins.”
Obi concluded by reiterating his commitment to ensuring a better life for all Nigerians, promising efforts centered on dignity, opportunity, and care.
“Every Nigerian deserves dignity, opportunity, and care. That is why I will continue to do my part to ensure that the ordinary Nigerians enjoy a better life, one built on access to education, quality healthcare, and genuine efforts to lift them out of poverty,” he said.
He summarized his philosophy by saying: “True leadership is not about mocking the weak, it is about lifting them up.”
