Anambra: Electoral Body Clears 2.8 Million Voters, Eliminates Duplicate Entries

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the finalisation of the voter register for the upcoming Anambra State Governorship Election, confirming 2,802,790 eligible voters following an extensive data cleanup effort. The election is set for Saturday, 8th November 2025.

The announcement was made by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC). Olumekun detailed the rigorous process undertaken after the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which saw 168,187 initial registrations.

The commission prioritised electoral integrity by deploying the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to verify all entries. This scrutiny led to the removal of thousands of fraudulent records.

”Following the display of the register for claims and objections… and subsequent scrutiny with the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), 27,817 records were found to be multiple registrations and expunged,” Olumekun stated. This action ensured that only 140,370 valid new registrants were added to the existing 2,656,437 voters.

With the process concluded, the total figure now stands at 2,802,790. Olumekun also provided assurance on logistical readiness ahead of the poll, which is now just over two months away.

He reassured citizens who participated in the registration or applied for transfers, confirming their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) would be available soon: “Mr. Olumekun assured new registrants and those who applied for transfers or replacement of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) that their cards will be ready for collection before the governorship election, which is just 63 days away.”

The densely populated Idemili North Local Government Area accounts for the largest share of the electorate, contributing 246,318 voters.
