U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized the election of Democrat socialist Zohran Mamdani as New York City’s new mayor, describing the victory as a “loss of sovereignty” for the United States.
Speaking at the America Business Forum in Miami, Trump called Mamdani a “communist,” suggesting that his leadership could push New York toward economic decline.
“America just lost a little bit of sovereignty,” Trump said in a fiery address to business leaders. “New York is on the path to becoming another Cuba or Venezuela — people are going to run to Florida.”
Mamdani, a left-leaning Democrat and longtime progressive activist, made history as New York’s first Muslim mayor after sweeping the polls in Tuesday’s elections. His campaign, built on promises of affordable housing, workers’ rights, and racial equity, drew both enthusiasm from progressives and sharp criticism from conservatives.
