PDP Group Appeals to U.S. to Safeguard Nigeria’s Democratic Institutions

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally called on the United States Department of State to “protect Nigeria’s democracy” amid concerns over electoral integrity and party defections ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday, the group’s spokesman, Seidu Damagun, said: “We are gravely concerned about rising defections and the weakening of opposition parties in Nigeria. We therefore call on our friends and partners in the United States to assist in safeguarding our democratic space.”

Damagun pointed to what the party described as “cross-party defections” and the “dilution of opposition voices” since the transition to civilian rule in 1999. The statement suggested that the current political climate threatened the balance essential for a healthy democracy.

The PDP group urged the U.S. to use diplomatic channels and electoral observation mechanisms to help restore confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system. A spokesperson stated that the request was made in light of forthcoming off-cycle elections in some states and the more critical nationwide contest in 2027.
