Bayelsa Unveils New ATR 72-600 Aircraft, Moves to Launch Commercial Airline

Bayelsa State has taken a major step toward entering the commercial aviation sector with the unveiling of a newly acquired ATR 72-600 aircraft, officials announced on Tuesday.

The aircraft, configured to carry 72 passengers, marks what the government describes as a strategic investment aligned with the state’s economic ambitions and growing aviation capacity.

Governor Douye Diri, speaking at the unveiling ceremony, said the acquisition would fast-track the launch of Bayelsa’s commercial flight operations. “With this aircraft, the state will commence commercial flights in partnership with Pioneer Airline,” he stated, adding that the company would manage operations for the new state-owned carrier.

Federal officials at the event also pledged support. Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, said the initiative would boost regional development. “This is the kind of infrastructure that drives growth in the Niger Delta,” he noted.

Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Samuel Ogbuku, echoed the commitment, saying the commission would partner Bayelsa to ensure “the needed development for the state and the region.”

The ATR 72-600 acquisition is expected to improve connectivity, stimulate the local economy and position Bayelsa as an emerging aviation hub in the Niger Delta.
