Youths Protest, Calls On Anambra Govt To End Community Leadership Tussle

Youths of Ezi-Umunya in Oyi Local Government Area, have staged a peaceful protest, demanding the immediate intervention of the Anambra State Government in the leadership tussle in the village.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that
the protesters, led by the Secretary General of the Ezi-Umunya Youth, Mr. Chukwudi Nwankwo, were seen with placards bearing inscriptions such as “United Ezi-Umunya, we want peace and not war,” “Please, Mr. Commissioner, we are tired of hoodlums as executives,” and “Ezi-Umunya does not want crisis; we want everlasting peace,”.

They marched from the Ezi-Umunya Village Hall through the Umunya Town Hall, Oyi Local Government Area Headquarters, to the residence of the Umunya President General, where they peacefully registered their grievances.

Speaking through the Secretary General, Mr. Nwankwo, the youths said the protest was to call for immediate action by the state government on the leadership issue in Ezi-Umunya Village and to appeal to the government, through the Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, to step aside Chief Gozie Nweke of Umudunu Kindred, Pharmacist Shedrack Obinna of the same Umudunu Kindred, Mr. Geoffrey Ejiofor of Umunagu Kindred, and others, who they said have been embroiled in a prolonged power tussle in the community

Recently, they ganged up to approach the commissioner to inaugurate them as interim executives of the village pending an election, despite an ongoing court case scheduled for decision on 11th March, 2026.

The youths made it clear that it is wrong for individuals who are in court over village leadership issues to be inaugurated as members of an interim government of the same village, hence the protest.

They appealed to the Anambra State Government to conduct a village election anchored on due process, fairness, and credibility as soon as possible as a way of restoring lasting peace in the community.
