Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party on Friday, joined by dozens of lawmakers and local officials in a mass exodus that highlights deepening rifts within the opposition group, according to a statement from his office.
The defection includes 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight federal House of Representatives lawmakers, and all 44 local government chairmen, marking a significant blow to the NNPP’s stronghold in the northern state.
Yusuf cited unresolved internal conflicts as the impetus for his departure, emphasizing a desire to prioritize governance over party turmoil.
“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” Yusuf said.
He expressed gratitude for the NNPP’s backing since he joined in 2022, adding that he remains dedicated to “peace, unity, and progress” in the region.
The party’s Diso-Chiranchi ward secretary, Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the move, praising Yusuf’s record in areas like infrastructure, health, and education while lamenting the loss.
“We commend the governor for his achievements in infrastructure development, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment,” Zubairu stated, adding that the NNPP had “no option than to accept the resignation of its most performing governor.”
The NNPP has been plagued by leadership squabbles and court cases at both state and national levels, eroding its unity since Yusuf’s 2023 election victory, which solidified the party’s influence in Kano.
