# The former lawmaker who represented Dunukofia Constituency at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Barr. Lawrence Ezeudu together with over 2,000 of his supporters, has been officially received into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Hon. Ezeudu was also the Chief Whip while speaking at the event held at his residence in Ifitedunu in Dunukofia LGA,
told members that he had never felt an urgent need to join a political party than he felt in joining ADC, saying that he had seen the zeal of the people to change the country.

In his address, the Chairman of ADC Party in Anambra State, Mr Patrick Obianyo, confirmed that since former Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, joined the party on December 31, there has been a huge influx of people into the party.

According to Obianyo, since Mr Peter Obi joined ADC, there have been requests in the party’s offices every day, for them to visit and receive politicians into the party.

 

# The Mayor of Njikoka LGA, Barr. Chinedu Ononiba has officially flagged off the ₦25,000,000 ward-based development project at Enugwu-Ukwu Ward 1.

The initiative marks the commencement of a comprehensive grassroots development programme that will be implemented across all 18 wards in Njikoka LGA, with a total projected investment of ₦450,000,000.

For Enugwu-Ukwu Ward 1, the community opted for a borehole project to improve access to clean and reliable water supply.

Addressing stakeholders at the flag-off ceremony, Barr. Ononiba reiterated his administration’s commitment to people-centered governance and equitable distribution of resources. He explained that each ward is empowered to identify priority projects that best address its peculiar needs, thereby ensuring transparency, community ownership, and sustainable development.

 

# Human rights lawyer, Barr. Ikechukwu Obasi, has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja against Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the Attorney General of Anambra State, the Commissioner of Police of Anambra State, and the Inspector General of Police.

The suit is over the closure of the Onitsha Main Market and other markets in the state over traders’ continued observance of Monday sit-at-home.

In the suit he filed under the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules 2009, Obasi argued that the closure of the markets violated the traders’ fundamental rights, including personal liberty, freedom from forced labour, human dignity, freedom of movement, freedom of peaceful assembly and association, right to privacy, economic development, and freedom of expression, as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act (CAP A9) 2011.

Obasi, who is representing the traders of Onitsha in a public interest litigation, said he became aware of the dispute after coming across a viral video where Governor Soludo directed that markets in Onitsha and across the state must be opened from Monday to Saturday, with the warning that traders who fail to comply should leave the state.

# The Provost of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN), Dr. Justina C. Anyadiegwu, has reaffirmed the College’s full alignment with the Anambra State Government’s Smart Education Reform under the leadership of Governor, Chukwuma Soludo.

The Provost who made this known in her 2026 Beginning-of-Year Message, noted that the State Government’s establishment of Smart Schools across Anambra State placed a strategic responsibility on NOCEN, as the state’s flagship teacher-training institution, to produce digitally competent and future-ready teachers.

Dr. Anyadiegwu disclosed that the College was rolling out massive capacity-building programmes for its academic staff and Anambra State Basic Education Teachers, in partnership with UBEC and ASUBEB, to ensure effective delivery of the Smart Schools initiative.

The election was conducted following the expiration of the tenure of the former substantive President-General, Samuel Okoye, whose term officially ended in August 2025.

After the keenly contested election at the Union Primary School Field, Amanuke, Comrade Odogwu scored 576 votes to beat his rival, Hon Simon Orakwe, who scored 532 votes.

The election conducted using the Option A4 voting model, witnessed large turnout of indigenes and was monitored by the Anambra State Town Unions Council (ASTUC), Electoral officers from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and office of the Local Government, as well as security operatives drawn from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), among others.

She further announced that the Department of Curriculum Instruction and Educational Technology had been mandated to lead the implementation of the strategic intervention, with full institutional support.

# The Department of English, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, at the English Hall, conferred prestigious awards on the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, in recognition of her exceptional contribution to the humanities and her outstanding performance in film.

The awards “Grand Promoter of Humanities” and “Iconic Actress” were presented in appreciation of her remarkable portrayal in the movie “Uzumma.”

In the movie, Prof. Omenugha convincingly embodies the role of a Vice Chancellor who stands as a symbol of fairness, justice, student-centered leadership, and compassionate authority.

Her character emerges as a beacon of hope for Uzumma, a young woman weighed down by cultural restrictions, academic setbacks beyond her control, and societal limitations that plunged her into despair, to the point where suicide seemed like her final escape.

# Hope Foundation in partnership with Njikoka Local Government Area, has organised ‘Football Talent Show 2026’

The event was held at the Njikoka local government secretariat, Abagana, at the weekend.

In his remark, the local government Chairman of Njikoka, Bar. Chinedu Ononiba emphasized the importance of combining sports and education as tools for youth development.

In his speech, Mr. Emeka Golden, the representative of (Hope in Foot Foundation) Switzerland, thanked the mayor of Njikoka for the collaboration and urged the pupils to make their studies a priority.

Mr. Golden maintained that the programme was designed to discover and nurture young football talents between the ages of 10 and 14 years, with opportunities for educational scholarships.

# The Nigerian Institute of Civil Engineers, Awka Chapter, has intensified its awareness campaign and sensitization of the public through an advocacy walk against building and infrastructure collapse in Awka.

The group, which walked through some major roads in Awka, carried placards with various inscriptions, including “Safe building is a human right,” “Engineering ethics must come before profit,” “Infrastructure failure is a national emergency,” and “Stop quackery in construction,” among others.

Addressing journalists after the walk, the Chairman of the Institute, Engr. Chidi Obiudu, explained that the awareness and advocacy programme was aimed at promoting public consciousness about safe construction practices, professional ethics, and the dangers associated with substandard building materials and poor workmanship, as well as engaging key stakeholders, professionals, and the general public in advocating improved construction standards and the prevention of avoidable building and infrastructure failures within Anambra State and Nigeria at large

In his speech, State House of Assembly Committee Chairman on Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Emma Nwafor, stressed that the construction of any structure should follow laid-down rules, regulations, and specifications and be handled by professionals and qualified engineers, lamenting that quackery has caused avoidable deaths and the waste of huge material resources.

In their separate contributions, a community leader and Vice Chairman of the Institute, Engr. Chidi Anuligo; a university lecturer and Secretary of the Institute, Engr. Collins Okoli; and Comrade Emmanuel Chukwunonso from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, said professionals should focus on their areas of specialization and obtain the necessary approvals from relevant agencies before commencing construction in order to ensure safe structures.

# The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ), Anambra State Council, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, has emerged the President General of Amanuke Development Union (ADU) in Awka North Local Government Area.
