South African singer Tyla captured the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance on Sunday, outshining a competitive lineup featuring prominent Nigerian acts with her infectious single “Push 2 Start”.
The 22-year-old artist’s victory marked a milestone for the category, newly established to celebrate the continent’s diverse musical landscape on the global stage, during the 68th annual ceremony in Los Angeles.
Tyla edged out Nigeria’s Burna Boy for his track “Love”, Davido’s collaboration “With You” featuring Omah Lay, Ayra Starr and Wizkid’s joint effort “Gimme Dat”, as well as Uganda’s Eddy Kenzo and Iran’s Mehran Matin with “Hope & Love”.
Obinna Chibueze known as Shaboozy also won his first-ever Grammy Award on Sunday afternoon. The country star took home the trophy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “Amen,” his collaboration with Jelly Roll, during the Grammys Premiere Ceremony, which streamed online ahead of the TV broadcast.
Shaboozey Dedicates First-Ever Grammy Win To “Children Of Immigrants”
Shaboozey who takes his stage name from a pronunciation of his family surname Chibueze — who migrated from the Igbo tribe of the South-eastern part of Nigeria— dedicated the win to the “children of immigrants.” The “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” singer, raised in Virginia, is the son of Nigerian immigrants.
“Immigrants built this country, literally,” he said onstage. “So, this is for them, for all children of immigrants. This is also for those who came to this country in search of better opportunity to be a part of a nation that promised freedom for all and equal opportunity to everyone willing to work for it. Thank you for bringing your culture, your music, your stories, and your traditions here. You give America color.”
