Anambra Gov’t Train Teachers On Climate Change, Green School Environment

Six hundred primary and junior secondary school teachers from the twenty-one local government areas in Anambra State have undergone a three-day seminar on green schools and climate change intervention

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that the training organized by the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, (ASUBEB) was held in Awka.

The Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, in her address, explained that the programme was designed to empower head teachers, principals, and education managers with the requisite knowledge and tools to effectively mainstream climate change education into the teaching and learning process,

Nwadinobi, expressing optimism that the knowledge gained through the training would be cascaded to their respective schools, local government areas, and zones, thereby strengthening the state government’s resolve to nurture environmentally conscious learners who will contribute meaningfully to sustainable development.

The Chairman maintained that the concept of green schools has become a global response to climate change and environmental sustainability, necessitating the need to equip young learners with the knowledge, values, and practical skills required to promote environmental stewardship.

On her part, Dr. Eucharia Oshia, a resource person who spoke on “Planting Trees and Raising Gardens in Schools,” taught the teachers how to green their schools by instructing pupils and students on tree planting, cultivating school gardens, and rearing common animals such as fish, among others, to ensure a balanced ecosystem within the school environment, so that learners can acquire agricultural skills that will make them self-reliant after their basic education.

Also speaking, in another lecture, Dr. Scholastica Nwankwo, charged the teachers to return to their various schools and inculcate in their pupils and students what they had learned about environmental management by recycling waste materials such as waste paper, cans, and sachets into useful items like decorative containers and flowers to beautify their classrooms and keep the environment clean.
