Independent National Electoral Commission has directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners to suspend publicity and preparations for the planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a circular dated April 4, 2026, signed by INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the commission instructed RECs to “step down all publicity and arrangements for the voter revalidation exercise and await further directives from the commission.”
INEC had announced on Wednesday that the revalidation drive would begin on April 13, 2026, as part of efforts to update the voter register.
The circular, however, directed RECs to continue behind-the-scenes preparations, including sourcing personnel and readying INEC Voter Enrolment Devices.
The commission expressed regret over any inconvenience caused by the sudden change and assured RECs that further directives would be issued in due course. No reasons were given for the suspension of publicity activities.
