A group of concerned stakeholders in Anambra West Local Government Area has raised concerns about the worsening condition of the Umuikwu–Onono road.
The stakeholders urged the Anambra State Government to take immediate action to rehabilitate this critical infrastructure.
Their plea, outlined in an open letter titled “Open Letter to Anambra State Government and Anambra West LGA on the Deplorable Condition of Umuikwu–Onono Road,” which has been shared with the media, the stakeholders, including community leaders, youth groups, and residents from the Anam area, described the road as a crucial economic and social corridor that connects several communities such as Umudora, Umuikwu, Onono, Oroma, Umuenwelum, Mmiata Anam, and Nzam.
They expressed worried that the current state of the road has severely affected transportation, disrupted economic activities, and caused significant hardships for residents and commuters.
The letter noted that this road project was initially awarded during former Governor Willie Obiano’s administration but remained uncompleted. Since then, its condition has worsened, making it increasingly challenging for motorists, traders, and farmers to use.
The stakeholders highlighted the strategic importance of the Umuikwu–Onono road as a primary access route to key commercial centers like Onitsha and Asaba. They argued that rehabilitating this road would alleviate transportation difficulties and boost agricultural productivity in the region; especially concerning Ugu (fluted pumpkin), a vital local crop with considerable economic significance.
They called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration to prioritize completing this project as part of broader initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure across the state.
The group cautioned that continued neglect of the road could further isolate communities within the Anam area and hinder local development. They urged swift and decisive government action to restore the road and enhance living conditions for residents in affected communities.
