Nigeria Union Of Pensioners Rejects State Governments Retirees Association

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) South-East Zone has rejected the registration of a parallel retirees’ association and reaffirmed its loyalty to the national body under the leadership of Comrade Godwin Ikechukwu Abumisi.

The position was contained in a resolution signed by the Zonal Chairman, Comr. Anthony Ugozor, and the Zonal Secretary, Comr. Elder Uma Kalu.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that NUP made the adoption during a zonal meeting of South-East member states held in Awka, Anambra State.

The zone stated in the resolution that the union’s attention had been drawn to what it described as the illegal registration of the new body refered to as ‘National Association of Retirees of State Governments of Nigeria’.

It added that after extensive deliberation, the delegates had resolved to uphold the structure established under Nigerian law and to resist any attempt to divide their membership.

“We the entire members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) South-East Zone belong to the Nigeria Union of Pensioners under the leadership of Comrade Godwin Ikechukwu Abumisi as established in the 1978 decree,” the resolution read.

According to the union, it would not tolerate any move to lure its members away, stating that any other organization that attempted to poach or conscript their members to another union would not be acceptable and would be resisted.

“Any other organization coming to porch or conscript our members to another union is not acceptable and would be resisted,” the document stated.

On the question of leadership and solidarity, the South-East zone reaffirmed its commitment to the national leadership of NUP, stating that their loyalty, support, and solidarity were total and unshakeable for their union, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), which was led by their President, Comrade Godwin Ikechukwu Abumisi, and their General Secretary, Comrade Godwin Amadin.

“Our loyalty, support and solidarity is total and unshakeable for our Union, Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), led by our President, Comrade Godwin Ikechukwu Abumisi and our General Secretary, Comrade Godwin Amadin.”

Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, Comr. Ugozor said the union remained the only body legally recognized to represent pensioners in the South East under the Trade Union Act, Cap T14 of 2024.

He recalled that a similar attempt by retired directors and deputy directors to register a separate association had already failed on legal grounds.

“The National Industrial Court has already ruled against such actions in Suit No: NICN/AWK/19/2021 on March 25, 2026. Our position is clear: we stand with NUP, and we will resist any attempt to undermine that structure,” he said.

The zone urged its members across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states to disregard invitations from the new group and to continue to channel their concerns and demands through the recognized channels of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners.
