Amaechi Vows to Scrap Indigeneship Policy if Elected President

Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has pledged to abolish Nigeria’s indigeneship system if elected president, arguing that the policy fuels discrimination and weakens national unity.

Amaechi made the declaration while speaking on governance and constitutional reforms ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that every Nigerian should enjoy equal rights regardless of state of origin.

“If I become president, I will abolish indigeneship and allow only citizenship. Every Nigerian will be a member of the federation,” Romiti stated.

The former minister further stated that Nigerians should stop identifying themselves mainly by region, religion, or ethnicity, insisting that the country must come first above all divisions.

Amaechi also criticised politicians who seek votes based on ethnic or religious sentiments, saying such politics should not continue in the country.

“We are first and foremost citizens of Nigeria. All this ‘I’m from the North, East, West and South,’ and calling people to vote for you based on religion and ethnicity, wouldn’t happen,” he added.

The statement has since sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians reacting to his views on national identity, politics, and unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
