# Nnamdi Azikiwe University Debate Club has paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University following the club’s outstanding performance at the Nigerian Youth Debate Championship (ANYDC) held at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Director of International Collaboration and Linkages, Prof. Charles Nwadigwe, said the team came to appreciate the Vice-Chancellor for the immense support and encouragement he gave them before the competition.

According to him, the university’s debate team recently returned from the championship with multiple speaker awards, judging recognitions, championship titles, and the prestigious Debate Union of the Year 2025 Award, proving that the confidence reposed in them by the university Management was not misplaced.

Prof. Nwadigwe stated that the achievements recorded at the tournament further reinforced the club’s commitment to producing quality debaters and sustaining excellence in national debate competitions. He also appealed for the Vice-Chancellor’s continued support towards future debate engagements and programmes.

 

# The Labour Party, Anambra State Chapter, has conducted its primary elections for the 2027 general elections, producing candidates for the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The exercise, which was conducted through the Option A4 voting system and held in Awka, witnessed strong participation by members, delegates, aspirants, and stakeholders.

Those elected as senatorial and House of Representatives candidates are Venerable Tochukwu Sagacious Ikezue for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Chief Ikenna Okafor for Nnewi North, Nnewi South, and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, Mrs Ifeoma Obiokoye for Anaocha, Dunukofia, and Njikoka Federal Constituency, and Ujunwa Onyekachi for Awka North and South Federal Constituency.

Declaring the candidates winners, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee and Returning Officer for the primaries, Mr Iduma-Christian Mayor, said that the candidates contested the primaries as sole aspirants of the party and were duly ratified and affirmed by the majority of members and delegates at a special nomination congress conducted in accordance with the Constitution of the Labour Party, the Electoral Act 2026, and the Labour Party Electoral Guidelines 2026.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Labour Party in Anambra State, Mr Peter Okoye, expressed joy that the exercise was peaceful and transparent and reflected the party’s commitment to internal democracy and grassroots participation, assuring that the leadership and members of the party would work hard to secure victory for all its candidates contesting the 2027 general elections.

On his part, the Labour Party candidate for the 2027 Anambra Central Senatorial District election, Venerable Tochukwu Sagacious Ikezue, while thanking INEC for monitoring the exercise, explained that if elected in the 2027 general elections, he would tackle the erosion menace ravaging the senatorial zone, empower many of his constituents, and run an accessible and inclusive leadership.

# Governor Chukwuma Soludo has formally reiterated his administration’s dedication to a governance model defined by inclusivity and professional competence rather than sectarian considerations.

Addressing attendees at the Anglican Diocesan Synod in Ezira, the Governor emphasized that his mandate is designed to serve all residents of the state, encompassing diverse religious and traditional backgrounds.

During his address, Governor Soludo articulated a recruitment philosophy centered exclusively on the ability of individuals to deliver results, maintained that public service appointments under his administration are determined by the value proposition an individual offers, dismissing the relevance of religious or denominational affiliations in professional appointments.

The Governor noted that effective governance prioritizes practical capability to advance the state’s developmental agenda over personal religious identity.

Reflecting on broader social dynamics, the Governor cautioned against the dangers of fragmentation within society, urged citizens to recognize their shared humanity as a primary identifier, expressing concern regarding divisions even within religious institutions.

While asking the public for sustained patience as his administration pursues its long-term policy goals, he called for a collective focus on unity, suggesting that prioritizing common ground is essential for stability in the face of contemporary challenges.

In his engagement with church leadership, Governor Soludo lauded the recent establishment of a nursing school as a significant contribution to the state’s infrastructure, further encouraged religious organizations to continue expanding their investments in the critical sectors of education and healthcare, but advised that such development projects should be balanced against the prevailing economic realities and the financial capacity of the parishioners.

The event also featured remarks from the Anglican Bishop of Aguata, the Right Reverend Samuel Ezeofor, who acknowledged the administration’s ongoing development initiatives and requested continued cooperation between the state and religious institutions.

# House of Representatives hopeful, Hon. Chibuzor Udekigbo, has decried and remonstrated against the level of infrastructural decay and developmental backwardness in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.

Udekigbo who is seeking to represent Ihiala federal constituency on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) bemoaned the fact that in spite of being one of the oldest local government areas in the country, Ihiala is abrasively poorly developed coupled with being ravaged by insecurity with little or no government interventions.

The House of Representatives hopeful observed that Ihiala is bereft of social amenities like roads, hospitals and schools for children to attend, emphasizing that the worst of it all, is electricity.

Udekigbo said Ihiala Local Government which doubles as Ihiala federal constituency has not experienced electricity for the past eight years and according to him, nobody is making any move to remedy the situation.

# Nnamdi Azikiwe University has recorded another milestone in its admission process with the successful launch and conclusion of a proctored Computer-Based Test (CBT) screening exercise for exceptional underage candidates who scored 80 per cent and above (320 and above) in the recently concluded Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination and are seeking admission into the University for the 2026/2027 academic session.

In strict compliance with JAMB guidelines mandating that under-aged candidates be assessed through four different metrics, including the University’s screening assessment, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Management Information and Communication Technology Unit (MICTU), under the directive of the Vice-Chancellor, developed and deployed a secure proctored CBT platform for the screening exercise, supervised by the candidates’ chosen first-choice university.

The innovative screening exercise was conducted seamlessly through the University’s digital CBT platform under strict supervision and real-time monitoring by the Admissions Unit and MICTU teams, demonstrating the institution’s commitment to technological innovation, transparency, and excellence in admissions administration.

In line with globally accepted innovations and CBT best practices, the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyahie, approved the screening format for the exceptional candidates. The approach was designed to reduce financial burdens on candidates and parents, enhance accessibility, guarantee candidate safety, and align the University’s admission processes with international and national digital assessment standards.

# The Anambra State Hospital Administrator, Dr. Frank Ifeanaeme, has received two 40-foot containers of medical equipment donated by MedShare in collaboration with The Coca-Cola Company under the Safe Birth Initiative (SBI).

The donation followed a pre-assessment exercise conducted in Anambra State several years ago to identify critical medical equipment and supplies needed to improve healthcare delivery across the state.

The initiative is aimed at enhancing the capacity of health facilities to save the lives of women and children, while reducing birth-related complications.

The Coca-Cola Safe Birth Initiative is a maternal and neonatal healthcare programme designed to reduce maternal and newborn mortality in Nigeria.

The programme focuses on strengthening selected public hospitals through the provision of essential medical equipment, repair and maintenance of existing devices, as well as technical capacity building for healthcare workers and biomedical professionals.

As part of the initiative, MedShare’s Chief Biomedical Engineer recently concluded intensive training for technicians and biomedical engineers in the state, which centred on the repair and maintenance of medical equipment to ensure optimal functionality of both newly donated and existing devices in health facilities.

# The Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha has held a Soft Skill Training Workshop for members of staff at the Senate Chambers, Igbariam Campus, as part of efforts aimed at improving workplace efficiency, professionalism, and institutional culture in line with the university’s 3Vs mantra of Values, Visibility, and Viability.

In her address, the Vice-Chancellor noted that it had been a long time such a seminar was organized for staff, emphasizing that the essence of the workshop was to equip staff with the necessary soft skills required to become better professionals and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the university.

Describing COOU as “the university of happy people”, the Vice-Chancellor stressed the importance of creating a productive and positive work environment.

Prof. Omenugha further cautioned staff against what she described as unhealthy workplace practices such as gossip, lack of dedication to duty, and spreading misinformation. She warned sternly against the leakage of confidential university documents and advised staff to focus on productivity, professionalism, and service delivery.

# In line with the Corps’ mandate to protect critical national assets and infrastructure, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Anambra State Commandant, CC Maku Olatunde, received in audience the Group Chief Security Officer (GCSO) of Stanel Group, Ms. Oluseyi Babalola, at the State Command Headquarters, Awka.

The visit was aimed at exploring possible areas of collaboration to enhance the security of Stanel Group’s facilities across the state.

During the meeting, CC Maku Olatunde assured the Group Chief Security Officer of the Corps’ readiness to provide robust security coverage for critical assets under its mandate. He emphasized that the NSCDC remains committed to creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the country through professional, proactive, and intelligence-driven security services.

He further urged corporate organizations to engage only licensed Private Guard Companies and to collaborate closely with the NSCDC for effective coordination, information sharing, and compliance with established security protocols.

The Group Chief Security Officer, Ms. Oluseyi Babalola, commended the Commandant for the warm reception and expressed Stanel Group’s willingness to work closely with the Corps to strengthen security arrangements within its facilities.

The NSCDC Anambra State Command reiterates its resolve to flush out unlicensed and quack security outfits and ensure that only qualified and vetted personnel are deployed for the protection of lives and property in the state.
