# As the world marks World Blood Donor Day, a Senior Medical Officer at the Government House Clinic, Awka, Dr. Nonye Ezeonyejiaku, has called on residents of Anambra State to embrace voluntary blood donation, describing it as a critical lifeline for patients in need.

Speaking ahead of the 2026 observance, Dr. Ezeonyejiaku noted that the annual event is dedicated to appreciating voluntary blood donors while encouraging more people to donate blood and help save lives.

She emphasized that blood donation remains a vital component of healthcare delivery, particularly during emergencies.

According to her, many patients including pregnant women experiencing severe bleeding, accident victims, children with severe anaemia, individuals living with sickle cell disease, and surgical patients depend on blood transfusions daily for survival.

# The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving emergency healthcare delivery with the introduction of free, 24-hour ambulance services for residents across the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, disclosed that the Anambra Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (ASEMSAS) is fully operational and readily accessible to the public.

According to the commissioner, residents facing medical emergencies can access the service by dialing the toll-free emergency number, 5111, assuring that prompt medical assistance will be provided at no cost.

Speaking on the initiative, the Hospital Administrator, Dr. Frank Ifeanaeme, said the service forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve emergency response across Anambra.

# The lawmaker representing Onitsha North one Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Barrister Mimi Ifeoma Azikiwe, has condemned the alleged abuse of a young child and called for justice, protection, and long-term care for the victim.

Hon. Azikiwe made the call after visiting the child, who is currently receiving medical treatment following the reported abuse.

Expressing deep concern over the child’s condition, the lawmaker described the injuries as heartbreaking and unacceptable, stressing that no child should be subjected to such suffering.

She disclosed that the suspects connected to the case have been arrested and are currently in police custody.

According to her, steps have been taken to ensure the matter is thoroughly documented and pursued through the appropriate investigative and prosecutorial processes.

Azikiwe pledged to closely monitor the case to ensure that justice is served and that it is neither compromised nor informally settled.

She emphasized that the child deserves justice, protection, and sustained support, adding that Anambra State must send a strong message that violations against children will not be tolerated.

The lawmaker also urged parents, teachers, religious leaders, neighbours, and community members to speak up against child abuse, noting that silence often enables such crimes to continue.

She called on residents to keep the young boy in their prayers as he undergoes treatment and recovery, insisting that society must do more to protect vulnerable children.

# As the world marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Governor Chukwuma Soludo is highlighting efforts aimed at improving the welfare, health and social inclusion of elderly residents across the state.

Since assuming office, the Soludo administration has introduced and supported initiatives designed to enhance the quality of life of senior citizens, recognizing their contributions to society and the need to protect them from neglect, abuse and social exclusion.

One of the most notable interventions is the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo initiative, through which more than 26,000 elderly persons across Anambra’s 326 wards received free multivitamin supplements to support healthy ageing and overall wellbeing.

The programme specifically targeted senior citizens who are often vulnerable to age-related health challenges and inadequate access to healthcare.

# The Onitsha Country Club has strengthened its commitment to sports development in Anambra State with the commissioning of its newly constructed Tennis Pavilion ahead of the launch of its Tennis Academy.

Speaking at the event, the Anambra State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Patrick Agha mba, who represented Governor Chukwuma Soludo, described the initiative as one that aligns with the state’s vision for human capital development.

According to him, the occasion celebrates vision, commitment, and progress, demonstrating what can be achieved when individuals and organizations invest in infrastructure that promotes sports, recreation, and community development.

Hon. Aghamba noted that sports infrastructure remains essential for youth development, talent discovery, healthy living, and social cohesion. He commended the Onitsha Country Club for its contribution to sports development in the state and congratulated its members on the achievement.

Commissioning the facility, the Special Guest of Honour, businessman and philanthropist Chief Emeka Okonkwo, praised the club for creating opportunities for talent discovery and sports advancement. He noted that sports foster love, unity, and social integration.

Chief Okonkwo announced his intention to become more actively involved in sporting activities across Anambra State and revealed that he would serve as chairman of the first tennis tournament to be hosted by the club. He also pledged to donate a brand-new vehicle to the winner of the competition.

In his remarks, the President of Onitsha Country Club, Chief Kingsley Anietonwa, expressed confidence that the newly commissioned Tennis Pavilion would position the club to host major tennis tournaments aimed at identifying and nurturing young talents.

# The Anambra State Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA) has identified one-way driving, illegal parking and unauthorized loading and unloading of passengers as some of the most prevalent traffic offences contributing to congestion and road safety challenges across the state.

The agency highlighted these violations in a recent post on its official Facebook page as part of its ongoing “Jungle Campaign,” an awareness initiative aimed at promoting responsible road use and improving compliance with traffic regulations.

According to ARTMA, one-way driving remains a serious offence that endangers the lives of motorists, passengers and pedestrians, noting that driving against the designated flow of traffic significantly increases the risk of accidents and disrupts the orderly movement of vehicles on major roads.

ARTMA  expressed concern over the growing incidence of illegal parking and road obstruction, particularly in busy commercial centres. Vehicles parked on road shoulders, junctions and other unauthorized locations often impede traffic flow, create bottlenecks and inconvenience other road users.

# The Managing Director of Anambra Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA, Mr Ossy Onuko, has expressed pleasant surprise at the services offered by Fides Media, pledging his office’s readiness to patronize the foremost Catholic Media outfit.

Fides Media is the social communications arm of the Catholic Diocese of Awka engaged in sundry services such as printing of books and brochures, flex production, photo editing, outdoor video coverage and branding of shirts and souvenirs. Fides Media also publishes the popular Fides Newspaper.

After being conducted round the facilities, Onuko who was visiting Fides Media for the first time, said he was impressed by the facilities and services on offer, remarking that he never knew such facilities existed in the company.

Onuko who was accompanied by some members of his office, promised to be giving Fides Media some of his office’s jobs to handle.

While welcoming the ACTDA team, the Director of Fides Media, Rev Fr Mark Obiora Ikeh, expressed gratitude to Onuko for honouring his invitation, even as he thanked him for his assistance in the past before he was transferred to Fides.

He expressed the hope that the cordial relationship between them would continue.

# The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, has expressed gratitude to God for a successful three years in office as Speaker of the 8th Assembly with a thanksgiving Mass.

The thanksgiving, held at St. Gregory Catholic Church, Iyiowa Odekpe, in Ogbaru Local Government Area, attracted political leaders, lawmakers, government functionaries, friends, associates, and people from different walks of life who gathered to celebrate with the Speaker and his family.

Among the dignitaries present at the event were the former Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District, Stella Oduah; the member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr. Afam Ogene; Hon. Chukwuma Onyema; and several political stakeholders from within and outside the state.

Speaking during the thanksgiving, the Speaker reflected on the journey of the 8th Assembly over the past three years, noting that the successes recorded by the House were made possible through God’s grace, unity among members, and the support of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Ndi Anambra.

Udeze said the Assembly has continued to uphold its constitutional responsibilities through quality lawmaking, effective oversight functions, and motions aimed at improving the welfare of the people and advancing development across the state.

He thanked members of the Assembly for their cooperation and dedication, assuring that the House would remain committed to enacting people-oriented laws and sustaining cordial relationships with other arms of government for the progress of Anambra State.

The Speaker also appreciated his constituents, political associates, family members, and well-wishers for their prayers, encouragement, and support throughout his time in office.

 

# The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) has taken steps to strengthen the economic empowerment of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) through a proposed partnership with Le Look Bags Academy,focused on skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development.

The Executive Director/Project Manager of ANSACA, Dr. Nkem Okeke, disclosed this on June 13, during a strategic visit to the renowned vocational training institution in Abuja, where he was received by the Academy Manager, Mr. Yohanna.

Owned by Chief Mrs. Chinwe Ezenwa, Le Look Bags Academy has earned recognition for equipping individuals with practical skills in bag production, fashion entrepreneurship and business development, creating pathways for sustainable livelihoods and self-reliance.

During the visit, Dr. Okeke toured the academy’s training facilities, helding discussions with management on potential areas of collaboration,  expecting to provide people living with HIV in Anambra State with vocational training, entrepreneurial knowledge and empowerment opportunities aimed at enhancing their economic independence and overall wellbeing.

 

# The Anambra State Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon. Patrick Agha-Mba, has flagged off the sixth batch of the 1,000 Youth and Women Skill Acquisition Training Programme at the Idemili South Local Government Secretariat, Ojoto.

Speaking during the ceremony, Hon. Agha-Mba commended the Chairman of Idemili South Local Government Area, Hon. Amaka Obi, for her commitment to human capital development and for taking deliberate steps to invest in the future of youths and women in the council area.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the vision of Chukwuma Soludo, who has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to empowering youths and women through innovative social and economic development programmes.

In her welcome address, Hon. Amaka Obi said the launch of the sixth batch of the training programme reflects the council’s passion for youth development and economic empowerment.

According to her, the community-based initiative is designed to equip participants with practical skills that will enable them to become self-reliant, create jobs, generate wealth, and contribute meaningfully to the growth and prosperity of their communities.

The council chairman encouraged participants to take full advantage of the opportunity, urging them to develop themselves into productive citizens capable of contributing positively to societal progress.
