DR Congo Stun Uzbekistan 3-1 to Keep World Cup Hopes Alive

DR Congo came from behind to defeat Uzbekistan 3-1 in a crucial Group K clash at the 2026 World Cup, boosting their slim chances of advancing to the knockout stage.

Uzbekistan took an early lead in the 10th minute through Eldor Shomurodov, but DR Congo responded strongly in the second half with goals from Yoane Wissa (penalty and 90+1), and Fiston Mayele.

Wissa’s first goal levelled the score from the penalty spot in the 68th minute after he was fouled in the box. Mayele then completed the comeback in the 78th minute with a clinical finish on the counterattack.

The victory keeps DR Congo in contention for one of the best third-placed spots, though they still require favourable results elsewhere.

Both teams entered the match knowing a win was essential, with Uzbekistan having suffered heavy defeats earlier in the group. DR Congo’s resilience, highlighted by strong defensive play in previous matches, proved decisive in the comeback.
