France has strongly condemned Burkina Faso’s unilateral decision to sever diplomatic relations, describing the move as “hostile and baseless” while indicating that reciprocal measures are under consideration.
In a statement from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Paris expressed regret over the escalation, which it said reflects a “worrying drift” in the behaviour of Burkina Faso’s military authorities.
“The French authorities note Burkina Faso’s unilateral decision to break off diplomatic relations with France,” the ministry said.
“France regrets this hostile and baseless decision, which illustrates the worrying drift in the Burkinabe authorities’ behaviour. The necessary reciprocal measures are currently being considered.”
The rupture marks the latest deterioration in ties between Paris and several military-led Sahel governments, where anti-French sentiment has surged amid accusations of neo-colonial interference.
Despite the condemnation, France reiterated its commitment to the Burkinabe people. “France reiterates its solidarity with Burkina Faso’s population and recalls the close ties uniting our two peoples,” the statement added.
French authorities also urged nationals in Burkina Faso to exercise increased vigilance amid rising tensions.
The junta under Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who seized power in 2022, has increasingly distanced itself from France while forging new partnerships, accusing Paris of supporting terrorists and undermining sovereignty.
