US Supreme Court Upholds Birthright Citizenship, Rejects Trump Bid To Restrict It

The US Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down President Donald Trump’s attempt to curb birthright citizenship, reaffirming that nearly everyone born on American soil is entitled to US citizenship under the Constitution.

In a 6-3 ruling delivered on the final day of its current term, the court preserved the long-established interpretation of the 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to people born in the United States regardless of their parents’ immigration status.

The decision represents a major legal defeat for the Trump administration, which had pursued executive measures and litigation to narrow the constitutional guarantee. “The ruling means that children born in the United States will continue to automatically acquire American citizenship,” the court’s judgment effectively maintained.

The principle has served as a cornerstone of US law for more than a century. Legal experts say the outcome will have broad implications for immigration policy and could limit future attempts to redefine citizenship rights through executive action.
