Lionel Messi’s stellar performances at the 2026 World Cup and for Inter Miami have strengthened the case for a record ninth Ballon d’Or, according to football outlet GOAL.
The Argentine captain has been instrumental in guiding his country to the final, delivering standout displays that include a dramatic late cross to secure victory against England. GOAL highlighted Messi’s unmatched influence despite turning 39.
The publication argued that another strong showing in the final against Spain would make his claim undeniable. “A ninth Golden Ball might yet follow later this year, given he has been the most influential player in this summer’s mammoth expanded tournament,” it stated.
Messi’s club form in MLS, where he led Inter Miami to success with record goal involvements, was also cited as bolstering his candidacy. GOAL noted that his achievements transcend typical club-league prestige considerations.
The eight-time winner remains the frontrunner in many assessments, with his leadership and consistency setting him apart even at an advanced age. Argentina face Spain in Sunday’s final.
