# The Head of Civil Service, Anambra State, Ngozi Anuli Iwouno, has commended the staff of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure for their discipline, dedication and commitment. She made this commendation during an unscheduled visit to the Ministry.
The visit is part of her routine monitoring of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), reaffirming Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s vision of a disciplined, accountable and result-oriented workforce committed to quality public service delivery.
It also reinforces Governor Chukwuma
Soludo’s burial directive, to civil servants to remain at their duty posts on work days by shifting condolence visits and burial from workdays to weekends.
Iwouno expressed satisfaction with the level of dedication to duty by the staff, noting that they were actively engaged in their official duties, with no loitering observed within the Ministry.
She also commended the neat environment and properly desilted drainages within the Ministry, describing the orderly work environment as evidence of good work ethics and effective leadership.
The Head of Civil Service commended the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Okey Ezeobi, for fostering a productive work culture and motivating staff to ensure excellent service delivery.
# The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Anambra State Command, and the 14 Field Engineer Regiment, Onitsha, of the Nigerian Army have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen inter-agency collaboration, intelligence sharing, and joint operations in the fight against threats to national security.
The pledge was made during a courtesy visit by the newly posted Commanding Officer of 14 Field Engineer Regiment, Onitsha, Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Awudu Enyia, and his team to the State Commandant, Commandant Maku Olatunde, at the NSCDC State Command Headquarters, Awka.
The visit was aimed at strengthening the existing relationship between the NSCDC Anambra State Command and the Nigerian Army fostering greater collaboration and synergy between both institutions in the discharge of their respective responsibilities to the Government and members of the Public.
During the engagement, Lt. Col. Enyia noted the long-standing partnership between the NSCDC and the Nigerian Army. He stressed the need for sustained cooperation among security agencies, describing it as critical to tackling the evolving and complex security challenges in the country.
The Commanding Officer commended the NSCDC for its professionalism and sustained efforts in the protection of Critical National, State, and Local Government Assets and Infrastructure. He also appreciated the warm reception accorded him and his entourage.
Responding, Commandant Maku Olatunde reaffirmed the Corps’ determination to maintain strong ties with the Nigerian Army. He emphasized that intelligence sharing, mutual support, and strategic cooperation must remain the hallmark of security agencies’ efforts to safeguard lives and property.
The State Commandant added that closer cooperation would further enhance the capacity of both institutions to address insecurity in the state and reinforce existing institutional partnerships.
He also wished the Commanding Officer a successful and impactful tenure.
# The Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare is appealing to members of the public for assistance in identifying and reuniting a rescued young girl with her family.
The girl was rescued from an uncompleted building near St. Faith’s Anglican Church, UNIZIK Temp-Site, Awka, following a distress report received by the Ministry. At the time of her rescue, she was found in a mentally unstable condition and without shelter.
In a press release, the ministry noted that
preliminary findings indicate that the girl was repeatedly subjected to molestation and sexual abuse by unknown individuals while she remained at the location. She is currently in the custody of the Ministry, where she is receiving medical attention, protection, and psychosocial care.
Unfortunately, due to her present mental state, she has been unable to provide information regarding her identity, parents, relatives, or place of origin.
The Ministry therefore earnestly appeals to community leaders, residents, religious organisations, and members of the public who may recognise the girl or have any useful information about her family to come forward. Any information received will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and acted upon promptly.
# The Pre-Medical Programmes Unit of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has successfully concluded its maiden Pre-Med Football Tournament, which marks a historic milestone in the Unit’s commitment to promoting sportsmanship, teamwork and holistic education among students.
The four-week competition, which commenced on June 29 and culminated in a colourful grand finale brought together students from twelve Pre-Medical departments in a keenly contested football championship that showcased discipline, resilience and healthy rivalry.
The sporting initiative, the first of its kind in the history of the Pre-Medical Programmes Unit, was conceived and championed by the Coordinator, Prof. Ebere Yvonne Nwamaka Ihegihu, whose vision and determination laid the foundation for student development beyond the classroom.
Speaking at the grand finale, Prof. Ihegihu expressed profound appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, for approving and supporting the initiative, noting that the tournament reflected the university’s commitment to producing well-rounded graduates.
She commended all the participating departments for embracing the competition in the spirit of unity, discipline and fair play, stressing that the tournament was designed not merely to identify champions but to strengthen friendship, encourage physical fitness and foster collaboration among future healthcare professionals.
The Coordinator also announced that every student who participated in the tournament would receive a Certificate of Participation in recognition of their commitment and sportsmanship.
# The Anambra State Boundary Committee has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining peace and ensuring the peaceful resolution of boundary disputes across communities, local government areas and neighbouring states.
Speaking during the Committee’s meeting held at the Deputy Governor’s Conference Hall, Lighthouse, Awka, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State and Chairman of the Committee, Dr. OnyekaChukwu Ibezim, said the Anambra State Boundary Committee has become more proactive than ever, attributing its achievements to the support of Governor Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.
Dr. Ibezim noted that the Committee, established by law to manage inter-community, inter-local government and inter-state boundary matters, has successfully resolved several long-standing disputes that had remained unresolved for many years under previous administrations.
Presenting the Committee’s activity report, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Boundary Matters, Hon. Okoye Bethel Ekenechukwu, reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Soludo and his Deputy to the peaceful management of boundary issues across the state. He also appealed for improved funding, operational vehicles and other equipment to enhance the Committee’s effectiveness.
The Committee approved requests for the demarcation and monumentation of boundaries between Mgbachu Nkpor and Eboitenani Umuoji in Idemili North Local Government Area, Agbudu Nando and Igbariam in Anambra East Local Government Area, as well as Ndikelionwu and Amaokpala in Orumba North Local Government Area.
Speaking on behalf of Eboitenani Umuoji, Chief Hon. Sir Chijioke Orakwue expressed appreciation to the Committee, stating that the long-standing dispute with Mgbachu Nkpor over the Okofia land had been peacefully resolved. Similarly, Chief Onwukwe of Mgbachu Nkpor confirmed that the mediation by the Committee had brought lasting peace between both communities.
The Deputy Governor assured both communities that the State Government would permanently demarcate their shared boundary to prevent future disputes and preserve the peace already achieved.
# The Anambra State Government says arrangements have been concluded for the execution of the proposed 132KV electricity transmission line project, which was initiated by the Federal Government about ten years ago but later abandoned.
The State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barrister Chijioke Ojukwu, disclosed this while speaking to journalists in his office in Amawbia, where he disclosed that the government is developing a framework to facilitate compensation for owners of buildings and lands that will be affected by the acquisition of the right-of-way for the project.
According to the Commissioner, the project, which is being executed by the Federal Government through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), will pass through Nnobi, Awka-Etiti and Nnewi, and is expected to improve electricity supply in the area and stimulate economic growth.
Barrister Ojukwu said the government has completed the identification and marking of the right-of-way and will soon invite affected property owners for documentation and verification of their claims for compensation.
He appealed to affected residents to cooperate with the government, assuring them that the Soludo administration would ensure that the compensation process is carried out fairly and transparently.
# The Anambra State Government has explained that it did not pay for the statue of famous Nigerian writer, Chinua Achebe, which was unveiled in Ogidi on Saturday.
The clarification came after many people on social media claimed that the state government built a statue which did not resemble the late author of Things Fall Apart.
Reacting to the reports, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on New Media, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, said the monument was planned, funded and completed entirely by the Ogidi Town Union, Achebe’s hometown community.
According to Opara, Governor Soludo was only invited by the community to officially unveil the statue because of Achebe’s outstanding contributions to literature and his importance to Anambra State and the world.
He said it was wrong to suggest that the Anambra State Government sponsored the project, stressing that the initiative belonged to the people of Ogidi.
Opara also appealed to members of the public not to turn the project into a social media controversy. He said the decision by Achebe’s community to honour one of its greatest sons should be appreciated instead of attracting unnecessary criticism over the artistic design of the statue.
He added that the monument is more than just a sculpture. It also contains engraved excerpts from some of Chinua Achebe’s most famous books, including Things Fall Apart, Arrow of God and No Longer at Ease, to help preserve his literary legacy for future generations.
The state government maintained that the unveiling ceremony was simply Governor Soludo’s way of honouring Achebe after receiving an invitation from the Ogidi community, while the responsibility for conceiving, funding and executing the project rested entirely with the Ogidi Town Union.
# Confusion has continued to trail the ruling of the Federal High Court in Abuja over the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, with the rival factions led by Senator Emma Anosike and Chief Ifeanyichukwu Osegbo offering conflicting interpretations of the court’s decision.
While the Anosike camp maintained that the court’s order restored him as the substantive State Chairman pending the determination of an appeal, the Osegbo faction insisted that the judgment removing Anosike remains valid and that nothing has changed in the party’s leadership.
Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court had earlier recognised the Osegbo-led State Working Committee (SWC) as the authentic leadership of the party in Anambra. However, on Monday, the court granted a stay of execution of that judgment pending the determination of the appeal.
The ruling immediately generated divergent interpretations, with supporters of both factions claiming victory.
Counsel to the Anosike-led executive, Douglas Najim, argued that the stay of execution means the earlier judgment can no longer be enforced pending the appeal.
He also contended that Senator Anosike and other principal officers of the state executive were not joined as parties in the suit that culminated in their removal, despite the judgment directly affecting their offices.
# The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Clem Aguiyi, has called for greater community participation in tackling environmental degradation following an inspection of major erosion sites at Amaenye Village, Abagana, and Enu Agu Village, Enugwu Ukwu, both in Njikoka Local Government Area.
During the inspection, Aguiyi attributed the worsening gully erosion in Abagana to illegal waste disposal, blocked drainage channels, and other poor environmental practices. He explained that the visit followed complaints from residents about an illegal dumpsite and the rapid expansion of a gully threatening residential buildings, Nnamdi Azikiwe Secondary School, and a major access road.
The Commissioner stressed that the area is not an approved waste disposal site, urging residents to dispose of refuse only at designated dumpsites or through licensed waste management operators. He noted that indiscriminate dumping of waste into drainage channels has obstructed the free flow of stormwater, accelerating erosion, while poorly terminated drainage infrastructure has worsened flooding by directing runoff into surrounding land.
Aguiyi revealed that Anambra State has more than 1,200 identified erosion sites, making it impossible for the government alone to address the challenge. He therefore appealed to communities to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal, keep drainage channels clear, and promptly report environmental threats before they escalate into disasters.
At Enu Agu Village, Enugwu Ukwu, the Commissioner described the erosion site as one of the community’s most serious environmental challenges, noting that it has already destroyed nearly one kilometre of land and continues to threaten nearby infrastructure.
He commended the community for planting bamboo and other trees to slow the spread of the erosion and for undertaking local stabilization efforts. However, he said the extent of the damage now requires major engineering intervention from the state and federal governments, as well as development partners.
Aguiyi also expressed concern over reports that some individuals have been cutting down the bamboo planted to protect the erosion site. He directed the Forestry Department and forest guards to collaborate with the community in safeguarding the vegetation, emphasizing that revegetation is essential for sustainable erosion control.
# The Acting Director of the Anambra State Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non Formal Education (ANFFE), Mrs Lilian Ezenwaka, has paid a courtesy visit to Amanuike Community in Awka North Local Government Area to strengthen adult education programmes and encourage greater community participation.
Mrs Ezenwaka and her team were received at the community civic centre by the President General of Amanuike Community, Mr Sermon Ikechukwu Orakwe, alongside the Chief Security Officer, Mr Ozo Charles Nnakweube.
Speaking during the visit, Mrs Ezenwaka said the agency remains committed to advancing Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s human capital development agenda by expanding access to literacy, vocational training and lifelong learning opportunities. She noted that adult education is offered free of charge across Anambra State, adding that ANFFE would provide learning materials to support enrolment and improve literacy among adults and youths.
Also speaking, the Unit Head, Mrs Angela Kasie Igboka, outlined the benefits of the programme and appealed for improved welfare for facilitators, describing the current allowances as inadequate for effective service delivery.
In his remarks, the President General, Mr Sermon Ikechukwu Orakwe, commended ANFFE for the visit and pledged the community’s support for the initiative. He invited the agency to participate in the community’s August youth empowerment programme through vocational skills training and assured that residents would be mobilised to embrace adult education. He also promised to give attention to the welfare of facilitators.
