Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has said President Bola Tinubu should not be held solely responsible for Nigeria’s problems, arguing that those who failed to prevent his 2023 presidential bid also share the blame.
Speaking on the Good News Naija programme, Kuti questioned how Tinubu was able to contest despite longstanding allegations and controversies.
“Do you think Tinubu is the problem? The issue is that they didn’t stop him from getting there in the first place; it’s his problem,” he said.
“That he had…, if all what they are saying is true, how did he contest? If we have men and women of calibre and integrity, he wouldn’t have been able to contest in the first place.”
Kuti argued that Nigeria’s political elite remains interconnected across successive governments, limiting accountability.
He cited the example of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, noting that pioneer EFCC chairman Nuhu Ribadu is now National Security Adviser under Tinubu.
“This same Ribadu is now Tinubu’s Security Adviser. You see, it is the same people. They go to the same parties, they go to the same weddings, they hug themselves, they do everything together,” Kuti said.
He warned that the lack of accountability risks eroding young Nigerians’ belief in the system and their future in the country.
“A young boy of 15 that has this history or 20, when he sees what is going on, where is your belief in the system? Where is your belief that you have a future in this country?” he asked.
Kuti’s comments come amid ongoing public criticism of economic hardship and insecurity under the current administration.
