# Anambra State Government has assured residents that its administration is taking steps to address the persistent increase in house rents across the state.
The Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, who attributed the rising cost of accommodation partly to human factors and excessive profiteering, disclosed this when officials of the Student Union Government (SUG), College of Health Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi Campus, paid him a courtesy visit at the Light House, Awka.
Dr. Ibezim expressed concern over the escalating rents in Awka, Nnewi and other parts of the state, assuring that government is working on measures to ease the burden on residents. He urged the students to remain committed to their studies and pursue their ambitions through hard work and discipline.
He cautioned them against violence, cultism and other forms of social vices, stressing that such activities destroy lives, truncate destinies and offer no meaningful future.
In his speech, the SUG President of the College of Health Sciences, Nnewi Campus, Mr Joseph Abarike, commended the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo for its people-oriented programmes and policies, which he said had positively impacted the welfare of residents.
Abarike appealed to the state government to strengthen its investment in the education and future of undergraduates, while also calling for urgent measures to address the high cost of accommodation, which he said was becoming increasingly difficult for students to afford.
# The Anambra State Police Command has recorded another significant feat during a routine patrol operation with operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).
During the operation, the team recovered two fabricated pistols and three caps bearing an inscription associated with a secret cult from an abandoned motorcycle in Awka North Local Government Area.
The Operatives while on patrol along the Isuaniocha Bridge, sighted two young men riding a black-coloured Sanyang motorcycle without a registration number. The suspects, on sighting the Police team, suddenly and recklessly turned the motorcycle in an apparent attempt to evade the operatives. The suspicious action prompted the officers to give them a hot chase.
During the pursuit, the suspects fell from the motorcycle and abandoned it, together with two slippers and a bag, before fleeing into a nearby bush. A search of the abandoned bag subsequently led to the recovery of two fabricated pistols and three caps bearing an inscription associated with the Vikings Confraternity.

Anambra State Command, efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and determine their identities, affiliations and the circumstances surrounding the possession of the recovered firearms and items.
Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP. Nnanna Oji Ama, notes that the Command remains committed to sustained patrols, intelligence-led operations and proactive policing measures aimed at disrupting criminal activities and ensuring the safety and security of residents across the State.
CP Ama further directs that efforts should be intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
# Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr Law Mefor received an award from the Director of Student Empowerment and Initiatives, Students Union Government (SUG), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka.
The award recognised Dr. Mefor’s significant contributions to student development and his support for the recent Catalyst 2026 empowerment program at UNIZIK.
Speaking during the presentation of the award, the Director, Students Empowerment and Initiatives, SUG, UNIZIK, Miss Chidimma Kevin called Dr. Mefor a consistent advocate for young people, stating.
“You are among the key supporters of youth development, Mr Commissioner.” On behalf of my team and the SUG, UNIZIK, we say thank you, Sir, for your fatherly advice, guidance and support.”
Responding, Dr Mefor thanked the SUG leadership and stressed that digital skills and student empowerment are critical in today’s economy.
He observed that much of what is taught in tertiary institutions in Nigeria does not fully prepare graduates for contemporary challenges; hence, the need for deliberate skills development.
The commissioner urged UNIZIK students to acquire digital skills alongside their degrees, describing it as key to fitting into the future of work.
Mefor explained that Governor Chukwuma Soludo aims to make Anambra a hub for technology and innovation, citing the conversion of the Old Government House into the Solution Innovation District (SID), with the dream of transforming the place into Africa’s Silicon Valley.
# Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Angel Network News (ANN) Chapel, on Friday, August 14, 2026, paid a courtesy visit and embarked on a media excursion to the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), Awka, to strengthen professional collaboration and enhance their knowledge of broadcast journalism.
Speaking during the visit, Chairman of the ANN Chapel, Sir Bonvera Onyebuchi Ndubisi, commended ABS for its efforts in promoting ethical journalism and responsible media practice.
Ndubisi said the excursion was aimed at educating and enlightening members of the chapel, particularly by exposing them to the operations and professional practices of a broadcast organisation.
He explained that as an online news medium, ANN was interested in improving its understanding of broadcast journalism and learning from ABS’s experience.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of Angel Network News, Dr. Ifeanyi Obiefuna, congratulated the Managing Director of ABS, Mr. Chris Molokwu, on his reappointment, describing it as well deserved.
Obiefuna said the courtesy visit was an opportunity for ANN to learn more about the operations of ABS while strengthening the existing cordial relationship between both organisations.
Responding, the ABS Managing Director, Mr. Chris Molokwu, commended the ANN Chapel for the visit and urged its members to intensify community-based reporting.
Molokwu also called for greater collaboration among journalists in the state, urging them to amplify the achievements of the Anambra State Government under Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
The highlight of the visit was a tour of the radio and television sections of ABS, where members of the ANN Chapel were taken through various aspects of broadcast operations.
# The leadership crisis rocking the Amichi Development Union (ADU) has deepened following allegations that the Anambra State Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr Vin Ifeanyi Ezeaka, unlawfully extended the tenure of the union’s President-General, Mr Cletus Udebuani.
The aggrieved members, in a statement titled “Statement of Facts: Amichi Development Union (ADU) Leadership Dispute,” appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, to caution the commissioner and ensure that the provisions of the union’s constitution and a subsisting court order are respected.
The dispute reportedly dates back to the 2022 election of the President-General of the ADU, following which some aggrieved members instituted a suit challenging the outcome.
According to the statement, the legal action was instituted despite the Anambra State Government having earlier certified Udebuani as President-General of the union.
# The Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District, Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu, joined the women of Nnewi North at their 2026 August Meeting, where he shared in their homecoming and togetherness.
The Senator, warmly welcomed by the women, expressed their appreciation for his continued recognition of the important place of women in the growth and wellbeing of families and society at large.
Nwachukwu praised the women for their strength, dedication, wisdom, and sacrifices, acknowledging the many ways they contribute to the stability of their homes. He emphasized that women are key partners in development and deserve to be encouraged, supported, and given the opportunity to contribute even more to society.

# A Professor of Comparative Politics, Peace and Security Governance at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Chukwuemeka Innocent Jaja Nwanegbo, Delivered the 128th Inaugural Lecture in a Grand Style.
Prof. Nwanegbo, while delivering his lecture said good governance, not brute force alone, is the surest pathway to lasting peace and security in Nigeria.
The scholar noted that from its origin, the literature of political science is replete with established positions on the role of politics and governance in maintaining peace and security, adding that politics remains the foundation for establishing societal order.
Prof. Nwanegbo defined politics as “the exercise of power and authority, the making of collective decisions, the allocation of scarce resources and the practice of persuasion through acceptable means within any polity.
On governance, Prof. Nwanegbo described it as a phenomenon that exists whenever a group of people come together to accomplish an end.
The University Don referenced the World Bank’s three key aspects of governance: the form of political regime, the process by which authority is exercised in managing a country’s economic and social resources, and the capacity of government to design, formulate, implement policies and discharge functions.
# The President General of Igboukwu community in Aguata Local Government Area, Barrister Michael Ubah and Traditional Ruler, Igwe Alex Azike, hands over fifty-six plots of land for the development of “National Yam Festival Cultural Village” at Etiti village of the community for public use.
The community handed the papers for the land to the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Barrister Udorji Amedu, represented by the Director of Tourism, Mrs Chioma Afuba.
The Commissioner noted that Governor Chukwuma Soludo is tourism-friendly, and that the place will be a tourist attraction, promising that the ministry will do everything possible to make the yam festival cultural village thrive and gain recognition by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO.
In his address, the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musawa, represented by the Director, Department of Cultural Industries and Heritage, Princess Ginika Nwafor-Orizu, promised that the ministry will support, preserve, develop with excellence and ensure that place remains a place where every indigene, Igbos, Nigerians and visitors can visit to learn, research, relax, market, patronize, invest, celebrate, showcase and be proud of.
Speaking in an interview, the President General of Igboukwu community, Barr. Ubah, declared the project a “prayer answered”, and that the community is ready to help make it a tourist destination of first choice.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Mbido Igbo Association, Chief Ugochukwu Okafouzu, explained that the “National Yam Festival Cultural Village” will have yam barn, cocoyam barn, pavilion, royal dome, art exhibition center, tourism institute, yam/ cocoyam research/ information center, hotel, among others.
Okafouzu expressed hope that public-private-community partnership will help speed up infrastructural development of the ‘village’, and that the government will provide access road, electricity, water, landscaping, fencing, security, joint management team, among others.
# Twenty-four years after a section of Achina community broke away to establish a separate autonomous community, peace and reconciliation have returned to the town following a Supreme Court ruling nullifying the disputed autonomous status.
The development has ended years of controversies, recriminations and counter-recriminations over the creation of the autonomous community, with members of the affected sides now seeking to rebuild their relationship and move the community forward as one.
The Supreme Court judgment of June 5, which affirmed the decisions of the lower courts nullifying the autonomous status granted to various communities in Anambra State, effectively brought the long-running dispute to an end.
Following the judgment, the Achina community has embarked on a reconciliation process aimed at healing the wounds of the past.
Speaking with journalists in Awka, the President-General of Achina, Mr Anthony Ezenwaka, said a reconciliation meeting held in the community on August 8 brought together brothers and sisters who had hitherto been on opposite sides of the dispute.
# The Anambra State government says it will partner with the South East Zonal Office of National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons to control illegal acquisition of firearms and strengthen the security apparatus of the state.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo stated when a delegation of the centre led by its South East Zonal Director, Captain Chris Anushiem, paid him a courtesy visit in his office at the Light House, Awka.
The Governor, represented by his deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim said that security is one of the top priorities of his administration, as it is committed to ensuring adequate protection of lives and prosperity of the citizenry, through collaboration with various security agencies in the state.
He expressed hope that with the new partnership, Anambra will be safer, assuring to give the centre all the necessary support to enable it optimally operate in the state.
The leader of the team, Captain Anushiem, in his speech, revealed that the centre which was established in July 2024 is entrusted with the responsibilities of registration and control of use of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria, and appealed for partnership between the Anambra State government and the centre for a more secured state.om N700m to N1.5billion
