A Labour Party chieftain has filed three separate lawsuits at the Federal High Court in Abuja demanding official records on the academic and national service credentials of Peter Obi, the Nigerian Democratic Congress presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
Abayomi Arabambi sued the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He alleged that his requests for information on records linked to Obi’s certificates were either rejected or left unanswered.
The suits, brought under the Freedom of Information Act, seek disclosure of Obi’s WAEC certificate, UNN academic and graduation records, and relevant NYSC documents. The WAEC and NYSC cases were filed on September 1, while the UNN suit was filed on September 9, 2026.
Arabambi made clear that he is not asking the court to rule on whether the certificates Obi submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 presidential race are genuine or forged. He said he only wants the institutions to release their existing official records so that the status and details of the certificates can be established.
The legal action comes ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Arabambi argued that the disclosure of the records is in the public interest and necessary for transparency and accountability regarding individuals seeking high public office.
