US President Donald Trump said “massive” exploration for oil, gas and minerals is about to begin in Greenland, describing the Arctic island as holding some of the world’s largest easily extractable oil reserves.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump wrote: “Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!”
Citing experts, he added that “the amount of easily available Oil is far greater than that of almost … anywhere in the World.”
Trump provided no details on timelines, companies involved or the extent of potential US participation.
The comments come weeks after the United States, Denmark and Greenland signed a security agreement that expands the US military presence on the self-governing Danish territory. The deal allows for two new military bases and supports Trump’s planned “Golden Dome” missile defence system while reaffirming Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.
The pact was designed to end nearly two years of tension sparked by Trump’s repeated suggestions that the United States might seize Greenland by force.
In the same social media post, Trump praised the strategic value of the agreement, saying the security benefits for the United States and Europe were “second to none.”
“Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our defence will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived,” he said. “It gives us time, location, and sightline, like nowhere else in the world!”
There was no immediate response from the governments of Greenland or Denmark to Trump’s latest remarks.
