US President Donald Trump has described Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “not a good guy for us to deal with” and said he finds the Ukrainian leader more difficult to negotiate with than Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump made the comments on Thursday in an interview with Newsmax amid rising tensions between Washington and Kyiv over Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure and the future of US support for Ukraine.
“Zelensky is a not a good guy for us to deal with. Biden gave him hundreds of billions of dollars, billions and billions of dollars,” Trump said.
He added that any settlement of the conflict was unlikely under Zelensky’s leadership. “He doesn’t want to settle. He says he wants to settle, but he doesn’t know. I’m not a big fan of Zelensky,” the US president said.
Trump further stated: “It should end soon. I think they actually both would like to see it end. But I think I find Zelensky to be more difficult to deal with than Putin.”
He blamed previous US administrations, particularly those of Barack Obama and Joe Biden, for the conflict’s origins, pointing to Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea. “They’ve destroyed that country… It really began with Barack Hussein Obama when they made them give up Crimea. Crimea is the most valuable part, by far, of Ukraine,” Trump said.
The remarks come after Zelensky announced that Ukraine had lifted restrictions on attacks against Russian oil refineries, citing continued Russian assaults on Ukrainian energy facilities.
“The block on attacking refineries is out. We’re done,” Zelensky said in an interview with the Financial Times.
Zelensky also voiced concern over reported restrictions on US intelligence-sharing and access to the Starlink satellite service, describing any withdrawal of such support as “dangerous.”
Trump has previously pressed Kyiv to halt strikes on Russian energy targets, arguing they contribute to higher global fuel prices, and has linked US military and intelligence assistance to greater restraint by Ukraine.
