The Portuguese Football Federation has handed Cristiano Ronaldo a 30-day suspension and a fine of 255 euros for abandoning the national team’s training camp during the recent international break.
The Disciplinary Council of the federation found the 41-year-old captain guilty of leaving the squad’s base in Denmark on September 30 without justification, after a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the team.
“Based on the foregoing and the grounds set out, the Disciplinary Council, Amateur Section, of the Portuguese Football Federation decided, in this case, to consider the charge fully justified, and accordingly, to convict the accused Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro of committing the disciplinary offence provided for and punishable under the first paragraph of Article 160 of the disciplinary regulations of the Portuguese Football Federation, in a single instance and deliberately,” the official decision stated.
It added: “Based on this, it was decided to impose a 30-day suspension, in addition to a financial fine of 2.5 accounting units, equivalent to 255 euros.”
Under the federation’s regulations, Ronaldo had faced a potential ban of between one and six months plus a higher fine. The sanction imposed was the minimum available.
The suspension is not expected to prevent the Al Nassr forward from being available for Portugal’s upcoming Nations League matches against Denmark on November 14 and Wales on November 17, as time already served under a provisional suspension is understood to count towards the 30-day period.
Ronaldo left the camp after being left out of the starting lineup against Norway and later apologised for the episode, saying he remained available for selection once any punishment was served. Federation president Pedro Proença has previously indicated that the organisation wants the veteran forward to return to the national team.
