* Anambra state has hosted the first Southeast Human Capital Development Regional Conference which is geared towards improving the living standard of people of South East region. The conference focused on bettering the lives of people in the zone in three thematic areas which include health and nutrition, education and labour participation. The two-day event which is ongoing at the International Convention Centre in Awka, with the theme, “Changing the Narrative Towards Entrenching Human Capital Development in South East Nigeria, attracted top government officials, critical stakeholders in health and nutrition, education and labour sectors, as well as civil society organizations and representatives of the disability community.
* The directorate of Igbo Village and Centre for African Civilization (IVACAC), Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka has unveiled her Igbo Calendar and UNIZIK Almanac Academic Calendar on the occasion of the ‘2023 Igu Aro Igbo Festival’ held at the Faculty of Arts Arena. The colourful event which took place saw the creme de la creme and custodians of the rich Igbo cultural heritage and traditions converge for the annual programme that showcased Ndigbo and who they are as one of the major tribes in Nigeria.
* The APGA Candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial election, Hon Dozie Nwankwo, Onyendozi has described as false the publication making round Social Media that he celebrated the recent Federal High Court ruling that nullified Sen. Victor Umeh as Labour Party Candidate for Anambra Central. In a press statement, personally signed by the federal Lawmaker representing Dunukofia/Njikoka/Anaocha Federal Constituency, and made available to Media Houses, Hon. Nwankwo reiterated his non bitter stance in his political engagements with his campaign entirely based on issues and not personalities.
* An All Progressives Grand Alliance Chieftain in Awka, Comrade Obi Ochije Modilim has called on politicians in Anambra state to stay away from name calling and character assassination. Comrade Ochije Modilim who made this call while speaking to the ABS in Awka, urged political gladiators to stick to issue-based campaigns rather than character assassination and heating up the polity.
* The Works Committee of the Anambra State House of Assembly has declared that it will in no distant time begin to publish the names of construction companies executing shoddy road projects in Anambra state. The Committee equally expressed dissatisfaction with the way and manner some construction companies are handling contracts awarded to them after being mobilised by 50% of the contractual obligations by the Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo administration.
* Following the thirty-first January deadline for the currency swap by the Central Bank of Nigeria, for the old naira notes of two hundred, five hundred and one thousand naira, residents of Awka and environs have besieged bank offices in Awka. Banks located at Zik’s Avenue and Enugu/Onitsha expressway as well as Eke Awka market had most customers come to the banks as early as seven in the morning amidst much crowd, malfunctioning of Automated Teller Machines, ATMs.
* The Anambra State Ministry of Health has continued inspection of all the private hospitals operating in the state, with a visit to hospitals in Onitsha. The team led by Head, Medical Services Department, State Ministry of Health, Dr Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, inspected some hospitals at New Cemetery Road, MCC, Onitsha and observed that some hospitals do not have befitting facilities, some were not functional and others were not registered, while others have befitting facilities and are registered with the government.
* Residents of Nnewi-North LGA came out en masse to collect their PVCs as INEC’s official deadline for PVC collecting approaches.
Engr. Christian Ezeh Obiora, chairman of the Nnewi-North TC has encouraged people to wait patiently since orderliness will assist them receive their PVC.
* The lawmaker representing Awka-South 2 state constituency in the 7th legislature of Anambra state, Hon. Chukwuma Pius Okoye, has undertaken to sponsor the daughter of a widow from J.S.S 1 to S.S 3, to help the poor little girl actualise her dreams and aspirations.
Speaking to journalists at Amawbia town hall in Awka-South local government area on why he chose to place the young girl on scholarship, Okoye said he was touched by the little girl’s intelligence when she was called upon to say the opening prayer at the APGA campaign rally held at Amawbia town hall at the weekend.
* His Grace International School, Okija has won the first position in the inter-secondary schools’ drama competition organised by Okija Entertainment and Creativity Committee at Okija Grammar School. His Grace International College scored eighty percent in her drama titled “Consequences”, British Standard College, Okija, scored sixty eight percent in her drama presentation captioned ” Discipline ” to take the second position while Saint Patrick Special College, Ubahumonum, Okija, took the third position with fifty-two percent in her drama presentation titled “Wicked Uncle”.
* Associate Prof Joseph Odiri Ugboaja (FMCOG, FICS, FWACS), Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), has been awarded the prestigious Thomas Sankara Prize for Excellence as the Pan African Icon of Healthcare Renaissance by the Youth Partnership for Africa’s Development, YOUPAID. The YOUPAID award was given to him in honour of his significant contributions to medicine as well as his great commitment to mankind and the nation at large.
* The traditional ruler of Awkuzu community in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, HRH, Igwe (Prof) Charles Maduegbuna Anikweze, has urged for peace and support to the newly elected executives of the town union, led by the President General, (PG), Chief Ejike Ogoegbunam, for rapid infrastructural development of the area. The monarch made the appeal when the newly elected PG paid a courtesy call on the monarch shortly after he was elected, stating that every monarch is a father to all and as such does not take sides during elections but rather supports the candidate that emerges victorious.
