The faction of the Labour Party (LP) under Julius Abure moved ahead with its nationwide ward congresses on Tuesday, ignoring an existing injunction from a court in Abia State.
In a statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said the exercise — held in all states except Abia — recorded “impressive turnout and smooth conduct.”
Ifoh acknowledged the court order restricting congresses in Abia, but insisted the injunction applied only to that state. He said the party’s legal team was working to vacate it, and that congresses at the local-government and state levels are scheduled for December 4 and December 6 respectively.
Meanwhile, rival LP leaders aligned with Alex Otti – who obtained the injunction on November 26 — called the congresses “unauthorised and unlawful,” urging supporters to disregard them.
The move deepens a long-standing leadership crisis in the party triggered by a unanimous 4 April 2025 ruling from the Supreme Court of Nigeria that voided a previous court judgment recognising Abure as national chairman.
