ADC Warns Electoral Law Loopholes Threaten Poll Credibility

African Democratic Congress urged lawmakers Wednesday to eliminate any ambiguities in the proposed Electoral Act amendments, insisting that only mandatory real-time electronic result uploads without loopholes can restore faith in the democratic process.

Party spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi issued the demand in a statement, stressing the need for unequivocal safeguards amid ongoing debates over the bill’s provisions. “Only an Electoral Amendment Act that unequivocally mandates real-time electronic transmission of results, without exceptions capable of abuse, can command public confidence and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy,” Abdullahi said.

He warned that vague clauses risk eroding electoral integrity: “Any provision in our electoral laws that creates ambiguity, discretion, or technical loopholes around the transmission and collation of election results fundamentally undermines the integrity of the electoral process and cannot be accepted in good conscience.”

The ADC called on the National Assembly to excise weakening elements and adopt the Conference Committee’s push for digital transmission, affirming its alliance with citizens for “transparent, credible, and verifiable elections.”
