Again, Taiwo Awoniyi Out of Super Eagles Friendlies

Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has once again been ruled out of international duties for Nigeria after Nottingham Forest manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, confirmed that he picked up an injury days before the club’s English Premier League fixture against Luton Town, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

According to several reports making the round, Awoniyi could be out until April meaning that the player has been ruled out of Nigeria’s friendlies against Ghana and Mali later this month.

While the extent of the injury has not been confirmed Espirito Santo admitted that the striker’s injury was a huge blow for the City Ground giants.

“He had a problem during the week. It is a big blow for us, a big blow. I don’t know how long he will be out for,” the tactician told the media.

Awoniyi recently recovered from a groin setback that saw him miss the 2023 Africa of Nations in Ivory Coast where Jose Peseiro’s men finished second after losing in the final to the hosts.

The former Liverpool player sustained an injury in November and was ruled out of action for three months, forcing him to miss the AFCON.

Awoniyi has been an important player for Nottingham Forest since he joined the club from Union Berlin last season but the Nigerian has seen his development marred by several injuries.

Since joining the English club, the 26-year-old has missed 27 Premier League games.

Awoniyi last featured for Nigeria on November 16, 2023, during a World Cup qualifier fixture against Lesotho.
