Popular Senegalese-American singer, Akon, has made some shocking claims regarding Afrobeats and his collaborations with Nigerian artists.
Akon stated in an interview that he helped in creating Afrobeats.
The singer recalled in an interview that he collaborated with a few Nigerian artists in the early 2010’s and that was what had grown to become Afrobeats.
“And then I was producing the music for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. From there, I went to Nigeria. What we created in Nigeria was what you see and hear now as Afrobeats,” Akon recalled.
Akon also disclosed that he signed artists like Wizkid and even helped develop Dbanj and P-Square.
“Wizkid was the first Nigerian artiste that we signed back in 2008. We went to work with him and Banky W in Nigeria. From there, we just started developing artists like PSquare, Dbanj and others.” he stated.
Akon also criticized the music genre for not addressing the socio-political issues that African countries are facing.
The Afrobeats movement has gradually become a force to reckon with as it is on a global spotlight.
