The games will take place at the indoor Sports hall as originally planned after reassurances from the Ondo State Sports Council that the venue would be prepared in time. Earlier there had been doubts about Ondo’s readiness to host, leading the NBBF to consider moving this opening phase to Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
However, last-minute guarantees from local officials have allowed the competition to proceed in Akure as intended. Eight teams are slated to participate in the Atlantic Conference matches this week. They include Elephant Girls (First Bank), Mountain of Fire & Miracles Ministries (MFM), Sunshine Angels, IGP Queens, Dolphins, Delta Queens, Bayelsa Queens and First Deepwater Queens.
The Nigerian Basketball Federation is partnering with Zenith Bank to organise the Women’s Basketball League across the country. After the games in Ondo, subsequent regional phases will take place in other locations.
Officials and players alike are enthusiastic about high-quality competition as the teams vie for the league championship. With the venue confirmed, the stage is now set for the tip-off on Tuesday, in Akure.
