Altercation Erupts Between Sudan and the UAE

Sudan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) got into a heated dispute at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The discourse resulted from a serious allegation Sudan laid at the feet of the United Arab Emirates. However, the UAE responded that Sudan’s claim is a mere distraction from the real issues that needs to be attended to.

A report by the Russian media outlet Sputnik revealed that representatives of Sudan and the UAE got into a verbal altercation at the UNSC after the Sudanese government accused the UAE of supplying arms and support to an opposing faction in the Sudanese war.

Al-Harith Mohamed the UN Sudanese Ambassador, claimed that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), armed with UAE weapons, “destructively launched” their fight against the Sudanese military while attacking civilians.

The ambassador also claimed that he has proof that the UAE supplied weapons, and the government wants to submit a report to the International Criminal Court about the UAE’s conduct.

“The military aggression launched by the Rapid Support militia, supported with weapons by the Emirates, is deliberately and systematically targeting the villages and cities,” the ambassador stated.

Responding to the allegations, UAE UN Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab retorted that Sudan’s “ludicrous” and baseless claims were aimed to deflect attention away from “grave violations that are happening on the ground.”

“If they seek an end to the conflict and civilian suffering, then why won’t they come to the Jeddah talks? Why are they blocking aid? What are you waiting for?” Abushahab said to Sudan’s ambassador, who sat next to him, as seen in Sputnik’s report.

During the gathering, the UN’s Pobee demanded a cease-fire “to prevent further atrocities, protect critical infrastructure, and alleviate civilian suffering” in El Fasher, North Darfur’s capital, which is under siege by paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

According to the UAE’s ambassador, in late May, the Sudanese army refused to continue peace talks with the RSF in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
