…Protests Over Plans To Unseat Elected President General
Amaokpala Development Union (A.D.U.) has kicked against plans to unseat their elected President General (PG) Hon. Chukwujekwu Okoli, and institute a caretaker committee.
Angel Network News (ANN) reports that
members of Amaokpala Community, in Orumba North Local Government Area, during a protest at the gate of the Anambra State Government House, registered their displeasure over what they described as an unwarranted plan by cabals within the community to
The spokesperson of the group, Architect Chukwudi Onuorah, while speaking said the crisis began when a certain individual took the community to court and later sought to be conferred with a chieftaincy title, which he said was against the norms of the community.
Onuorah explained that although the community later met with the individual and asked him to withdraw the court case before being considered for the chieftaincy title, the individual refused to do so and insisted on being given the title, a demand the community declined.
Also speaking, the youth leader of the community, Hon. Ifeanyi Nwafor noted that instead of abiding by the collective agreement, the individual allegedly issued a query to their elected President General, Mr. Okoli, and threatened to remove him if he refused to allow the community to bestow the title on him, noting that leadership of the community presently rests solely on the President General since there is no traditional ruler.
On her part, the women’s spokesperson, Mrs. Felicia Uzochukwu stated that the President General was elected in June 2024 for a three-year tenure, and wondered why a cabal would seek to frustrate an election conducted after over nine years of stagnation caused by the caretaker committee system in the community.
Uzochukwu described the elected PG as a long-awaited reformer, credited with steering Amaokpala away from prolonged underdevelopment toward a future anchored on unity, peace, and sustainable growth.
ADU members in thier large numbers,
carried placards with inscriptions such as “Mr. Chukwujekwu Okoli is our liberation PG,” “Vote of confidence on elected PG,” “We don’t want caretaker,” “In our elected PG we stand,” and “We have suffered enough in the hands of cabals,” among others.
Responding, Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, who received them at the Light House, commended ADU for their orderliness. He promised that government will look into their petition
ANN recalled that the June 29, 2024, PG election broke the eleven years jinx of caretaker administration in Amaokpala Community.
The historic election which produced Mr. Chukwujekwu Okoli as the duly elected President General (PG) of Amaokpala Development Union was formally monitored by the Anambra State Government, through the Office of the Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Town Union Matters in collaboration with ASATU.
The election, widely described by Ndi Amaokpala as “Liberation Day,” witnessed an unprecedented mass return of Amaokpala citizens from home and abroad, all eager to participate in the long-awaited democratic exercise.
At the conclusion of the process, the state monitoring team confirmed that the election was free, fair, and credible, and subsequently issued Certificates of Return to the President General-elect and other members of the executive.
In line with the Amaokpala Constitution, which prescribes a three-year tenure, the elected executives were mandated to lead the community from June 29, 2024 to June 29, 2027.
The Amaokpala Community has since reaffirmed its collective allegiance to the President General and his executive council throughout the lifespan of their constitutional mandate.
Furthermore, the community has resolved to resist any illegal or unconstitutional attempt to undermine or impeach the leadership, in recognition of its demonstrated commitment to peace, unity, and development.
In passing a vote of Confidence, the Coommunity listed the following projects as achievements of the Current ADU Executive
