An Animated Sci-fi series “Iwájú” by Nigerian Animators to be out on Disney Plus

Three friends from Nigeria and Uganda founded Kugali Media in 2017 to share tales from the continent because they were tired of non-Africans portraying African stories.

Tolu Olowofoyeku, Hamid Ibrahim, and Fikayo Adeola, the friends who founded the entertainment company, produced a comic book series titled “Iwaju” that is set in a futuristic version of Lagos, the capital and largest metropolis of Nigeria.

For the first time ever, Disney Animation Studios is teaming up with Pan-African entertainment company, Kugali and its founders Tolu Olowofoyeku, Ziki Nelson and Hamid Ibrahim, for a new sci-fi series “Iwájú“, coming to Disney+ in 2023
Now, “Iwaju” — which roughly translates to “the future” in the Yoruba language spoken in West Africa — will be on Disney Plus in 2023.

Iwáju, a project from Disney Animation and Kugali, would look at “a futuristic version of Lagos, Nigeria,” the company announced on Friday at the D23 Expo in Anaheim. In the series’ first trailer, a world of vivid colors, flying cars, and endearingly eccentric critters that resemble frogs and lizards is depicted.
